"Heya Girls!"
Yes, it does exist: art that you can afford! A brand-new fair, the Affordable Art Fair, is now making its first stop in Vienna after London, New York and Sydney. With the motto “Art should not be elitist”, the fair makes contemporary art accessible to a wide audience. Sixty-three galleries from Austria and around the world are participating and showcasing works by over 350 artists. And although the prices sometimes amount to a few thousand euros, they start at 100 €! The focus is on high-quality art at fair prices, with works ranging from paintings and sculptures to textile art, photography and mixed media, by both newcomers and established artists. There will also be live print demonstrations, plant installations by Viennese concept store Calienna, an exciting children's programme and food from Mochi, Wiener Würstelstand and Eisbazar. And if you buy a work of art, you can have it wrapped for free and take it home.
Wishing you an artful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Reinforced Concrete
What is behind magnificent buildings like the Zacherl House or Loos House, the Residenzpalast or the Dianabad? And no, we're not refering to the interior design, but rather their internal architectural structure. This goes back to the period around 1900, when the revolutionary technology of reinforced concrete not only facilitated the construction of an efficient infrastructure, but also allowed multifunctional buildings to be built. An exciting mix of metropolitan culture and innovative building technology – on show at the Wien Museum from today with models, plans and originals.

Grill & Chill
No summer without a little barbecue! And if you're worried about your neighbours restricting you because of olfactory differences (or if you simply prefer to feast without having to clean up afterwards), head to the sixth district. With a wow view of our favourite city, you can now indulge in roasted flavours every Thursday and Friday at the rooftop bar “Mariatrink”. Juicy beef burgers, lamb skewers, fresh salmon tataki and for veggies, of course, pulled vegan duck bowls or veg-burgers are all grilled here on a charcoal grill and at the Green Egg to the sound of chilled beats. Yummy!
Mariatrink, Windmühlgasse 28, 1060 Vienna. Thu+Fri from 18:00. Please book in advance. Web

Klimt Villa Garden Opening
A nice Sunday outing for Gustav groupies! When everything is buzzing and chirping, one of the city's most special gardens opens its doors again. And with great fanfare, for the Klimt Villa's Garden Opening is all about the blossoming of the famous Klimt rose. A highlight this year will therefore be two Klimt rose bushes in full bloom. Original drawings by Gustav and Ernst Klimt are also on display and those who have acquired a taste for them can then make a detour to the art market in the villa's salon. Afterwards: a glass of sparkling wine in the garden café!

It’s all about girl power on the string and wind instruments today in the Ehrbar Saal! This is where the first all-female ensemble consisting of members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra will come together for a musical symbiosis that is well worth listening to: Works by Mozart and Bobby McFerrin will be performed. Based on their orchestral music-making tradition, the six ladies span their repertoire from classical Viennese dance music to gems of opera literature and excursions into the world of film music and other genres. Gesangskapelle Hermann
Even if word hasn't quite got round the world yet: The smartest boy band since the Backstreet Boys comes from Vienna. And: The boys from Gesangskapelle Hermann can sing really well. They don't even need instruments ;-) Today at the Theater am Spittelberg, the Hermanns aim at things seen and heard in a satirical, folksy manner. In addition, they sing – always in a cappella mode – hits from their fifth studio album “Sehr Sogar”. Cheeky, loving and cool, sometimes hip-hop, then hit songs or even pop, but definitely as funny as ever ;-)

Eligius Award 2025. Jewellery in Austria
Austria actually has an award for modern jewellery design: the Eligius Award. It is awarded every three years in Salzburg. However, the submitted works can already be admired in advance at the MAK for the sixth time: Thirty-nine jewellery artists have experimented with a wide variety of materials, from pocket clips to corks, and have come up with completely new designs inspired by personal stories or current events. Pretty cool! Spoiler: Some of the creations are so unconventional that you will have to look twice to even recognise them as jewellery!

TVMordia
It's Sunday evening, you're zapping through the TV programme – yet another crime thriller. And yet another dead, young, conventionally pretty woman. Phew... Despite consistently high femicide rates in Austria, the female corpse is still an integral part of the entertainment programme. For TVMordia, actress Anna Rot talks to colleagues about their experiences of playing dead and the absurd demands and strategies to fulfil them. The interviews become a soundscape, the corpses are given a voice and the types of death are choreographed. Very well done!

Vienna Shorts
“Radical Intimacy” is the motto of this year's festival, which is all just about short films. Over the next few days, 374 films from 60 countries will flicker across the screen and take a look at the political space and solidarity as an act of resistance. The films will be shown in various cinemas, including Austrian premieres, feel-good cult films, queer comedies, social satire, politically committed films and much more. Today is the grand opening at Gartenbaukino with a party, DJ and six films in which proximity is renegotiated: physically, emotionally and politically.

Paper Calories and Wormy Peas
Being a chef in the years of hunger after WWII: Yes, that demanded a great deal of creativity. The legendary chef Franz Ruhm was up to the challenge: he published recipe brochures adapted to the difficult supply situation, explaining how to cook with substitute foods and unfamiliar, partially spoilt ingredients. These documents, along with numerous others, can be seen today in the Wien Museum. Ruhm's granddaughter Constanze Ruhm reads from his correspondence, while his daughter, Felicitas Ruhm, reminds us of the years of famine after 1945 in her talk.

Good news for Scandi shoppers: Mariahilfer Straße is now one fashion highlight richer, as the first Arket shop has opened in Vienna! The luxury brand from H&M is known for its sustainable, durable and functional designs, which just might sometimes cost a little more than at H&M. You can shop fashion for women, men and children there as well as beauty and home accessories in Nordic style. There is also a cosy café, curated by renowned Swedish chef Martin Berg. Particularly beautiful: the listed Loos façade and ticket hall, which was built over 100 years ago for a bank!

Weimarck
The proximity to the Naschmarkt has its advantages, as do the close relationships with farmers: The newly opened Weimarck uses only the freshest (organic) ingredients fom the market. And you taste it! The mountain char with market veggies (chard and potatoes yesterday) was pure perfection, miso carrots are a vegetarian's dream and if you want unusual, try the asparagus börek. Dani and Chris offer a modern and loving cuisine in the place where the Amacord used to be for decades. From 1 June, the soft opening phase ends and the Weimarck will also open for lunch. Great!
