"Heya Girls!"
Okay, so from Wednesday, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz will be closed to traffic for four days and become the lively centre of the “Angewandte Festival” 2025, so if you want to find out what the next generation of artists are up to, there's plenty to experience: from raku firing, where ceramics are heated to 1000 degrees in a short space of time, to an ice cream tour (what does an exhibition taste like?) and the KntiLab knitting station with artist Veronika Persche. If you feel like it, you can also try out the wheel of fortune in the Playroom (photo) or stop by the book flea market. In addition to guided tours through the premises of the Art University with the paintings and photos created this academic year, as well as digital art and everything in between. This year's festival was developed by the students of the Communication Design department, and the action will continue until 28 June!
Wishing you a curious week,
Your CitySpotterGirl
Angewandte, Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz + various locations in Vienna, 1010 Vienna. 25-28 June 11:00-21:00. Free entry. Web

A Year without Summer
Who among you has read the book “Mary Shelley's Hideout”? A great read, highly recommended. It's about the summer of 1816, when a volcanic eruption in Indonesia darkened the summer in Europe – and when Mary Shelley wrote the story of Frankenstein. Performance star Florentina Holzinger has taken this story as the starting point for her new play: It is about eternal life, medical promises of rejuvenation and the dangers of uncontrolled technological growth in a world characterised by Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Fascinating and frightening at the same time!
Volkstheater, Arthur-Schnitzler-Platz 1, 1070 Vienna. Premiere 19 June 19:30. From 10 €. Web

African Days – Moyo Festival
Unfortunately, the African Days at the Danube Island Festival will no longer take place this year. But if you still fancy some African vibes and want to enjoy African culture, there's no need to be sad: This year, the new “Moyo Festival” will take place for the first time at Gleis//Garten with free admission. Moyo means “heart” in many African languages – and for four days, the festival brings authentic music, traditional dances, colourful fashion and exciting African cuisine to Vienna. With African street food, dance and painting workshops and a bazaar for shopping, it's guaranteed not to be boring ;-)

Flea Market in the Archbishop's Palace
Only very few times a year does the Archbishop's Palace allow a glimpse behind its thick walls. On Friday and Saturday, the doors open for the big antiques and book market, as carla Nord has filled its treasure chests: Thousands of books of all genres (novels, cookery books, antiquarian books), rarities and curiosities can be snatched at bargain prices. Apart from reading material, there is also fine glassware, beautiful porcelain, armchairs and antique lamps to discover. A huge assortment – and the chance to visit the venerable palace won’t come again so soon.

Kässy
Kässy is everything and everyone she wants to be – singer, instrumentalist, producer and performer. One moment her music sounds like wandering through the deepest depths of an eclectic, stimulus-flooded hell and the next moment it sounds more like carefree floating. Incidentally, Kässy's first demos already saw the light of day through the curtains of her childhood bedroom and were soon turned into her debut single “Skirt On Pants”. Beauty meets ugliness, gentle meets harsh. Just like at today's gap site concert at Nordwestbahnhof. Free entry!

Atelier Fe Meets Fête De La Musique
Today, music can be heard from every alleyway, every pub and every window, because the Fête De La Musique is on! Started in 1982 as a street festival in Paris, it is now the biggest music festival in the world and is also celebrated in the Servitenviertel – particularly nicely at Atelier Fe! The charming gallery invites you to an outdoor DJ set in its garden and to the portrait exhibition “Seeking Silence”. And at the Ooak Bags pop-up, you can have your newly purchased bag personalised at the mobile embroidery station. Because dancing to music with a chic bag is twice as great ;-)

darkreads
Dark stories, anti-heroes and villains are the best entertainment? And shady characters make your heart flutter? Then darkreads is the place to go for you! Because Petra and Cat have always found the selection of dark romance and dark fantasy in the usual bookshops to be a bit lacklustre and have therefore founded their own shop for stories about black heartache. There, dark dreams come true – in the form of books, book merch, book boxes and more. However, the girls are only open a few times a month (like today), so always check their Instagram beforehand!

Solstice Fire Am Himmel
Hello, summer! Today marks the start of our favourite time of year. A spectacle of nature that is not only celebrated in the countryside, we also enjoy the mystical tradition here – for example with a glowing solstice fire! Two large fire bowls will be lit today on the Am Himmel meadow, between the Tree of Life circle and the Oktogon restaurant. Renewal, fertility and growth are symbolised by the flames – life itself is celebrated. A fantastic view over the city and barbecue specialities accompanied by some cool drinks: It will cetainly be a magical summer evening.

Unboxed Mystery Box
The addressees are are rendered unrecognisable, the packaging neutral, the contents a surprise. And that's exactly what makes the Mystery Box in the ninth district so appealing! Curious shopping queens can pick up return parcels from Amazon, eBay and the like from a vending machine for a price of 8-10€. You shouldn’t be picky or a bad loser either, because sometimes you can hardly believe what kind of stuff other people order... But there are also some real highlights to be snatched that would have cost a lot more if you had bought them properly. So be brave and try it out ;-)

Sleeping Leaves
Snow White as a climate activist? Sounds funny, but it's actually really enchanting! Inspired by the original fairy tale, artist Angela Andorrer has transformed huge leaves from the botanical garden with paint and beads, which can now be admired in glass showcases. Visitors move through floating sheets of paper with text passages from the fairy tale about the climate activist Snow Witness invented by Ruth Cerha. After publicly denouncing the G7, she ends up in a glass coffin covered in leaves following a poison attack. The outcome is uncertain.

Hello heart, I'm unwrapping you
What a beautiful thought: When we walk through the streets of anonymity, it's as if our hearts are wrapped up. But what would happen if we paid more attention to them? Could we begin to learn how to listen to our hearts again? The cultural association Barrierefreiheit im Kopf will now be showing us how this could be done with its dance performances in public spaces. The dancing will start today at Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz with a solo, a contango duet and an inclusive improvisation duet. Afterwards, there will be a discussion with the audience. So nice!

Edna Million
No, she definitely doesn't sound like a girly. One of the deepest voices in Vienna belongs to a young songwriter who was named after a fictional character of Tom Waits, a fact that is definitely no coincidence. Edna Million's deep voice and gloomy guitar instantly transport you to a world of lost places. The kind of smoke-filled bars that Tom Waits might like. Or a lonely desert in Palm Springs. Dark and unique. Inspired by Joan Didion and Patti Smith, she creates her own highly private dark universe. You can listen to her sing for free today at Museumsquartier!

camellia
Something smells nice! Just in time for the flower-power-season, a new mecca for flower lovers has opened in the first district. Not far from Dominikanerbastei, camellia not only offers an intoxicating variety of seasonal cut flowers, but also all kinds of decorative items for your home. These range from vases and scented candles to lanterns, life-size artificial cherry trees, cute iron frogs for the garden and outdoor furniture. For those who like it long-lasting – the artificial flowers look deceptively real. And at workshops, you can learn how to make a real wow-bouquet from the colourful blooms!

Freiluft Augartensommer
It's been quiet here in the Augarten around the Ambrosi Atelier for a long time. But this week, life is back: Palais Freiluft, once located in Palais Auersperg, will be opening in a new location and has renamed itself Freiluft Augartensommer. Under beautiful old trees, five restaurateurs offer culinary diversity: Roman pinsa is served alongside experimental sushi, Bio Langos Boiz have brought their fluffy yeast dough flatbreads, smashed burgers are served with XO meat and Nigl grills wild boar Käsekrainer. There's also a sculpture park, regular yoga-sessions and concerts. Summer in Vienna!
