"Heya Girls!"
In 1774, the Norfolk Pine was discovered on Norfolk Island during James Cook's second voyage around the world and brought to Europe. The history of the Usambara violet is intertwined with a German colonial expedition in 1886, and the geraniums in our flower boxes hail from South Africa, where they were actually used as medicine. In the 18th century, the hunt for exotic plants began, which then travelled for months by ship to Europe. From Thursday, the exhibition “Colonialism on the Window Sill” at the Weltmuseum will take an unusual look at ten of our favourite house and balcony plants that do not originate from Europe. Whether green lily, dieffenbachia or cactus: They first became a status symbol of the upper middle classes – and are now trendy plants of the urban jungle.
Wishing you a green week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Remassuri
A musical whirlwind in the heart of the city – that's what Andre Heller, Ursula Strauss and Ernst Molden have created with their show “Remassuri”. And this much can be said: the name “Remassuri” – an old Viennese word for tangle – says it all! With music, singing, pantomime, shadow plays and light effects, a colourful journey through the diversity of Viennese music is undertaken. Performers include the Neue Wiener Concert Schrammeln, virtuoso yodelers and singers. Kaseperl & Pezi and “Mummenschanz” provide some extra whirl. Like I said, whirly ;-)

Flower Festival at Ikea
Usually, you don't exactly dress up for a visit to the Swedish furniture store, but rather make sure you get out your comfortable shoes for the marathon run between the countless departments. Today, however, there is a certain dress code that pays off and it’s: flower power! Because anyone who comes to Ikea with a flowery item of clothing or accessory will not only receive a 25€ voucher that can be redeemed on the same day for a purchase of 100€ or more, but can also feast their way through a free plate of meat(less)balls. That’s worth it, isn't it?!

Luksan Wunder
Luksan Wunder are a comedy collective from Berlin and Freiburg who have created a widely ramified and extremely funny nerd universe: Gags and formats are fired at an astonishingly high rate – sometimes crude, then subtle, sometimes strange, sometimes music, or video, or sketch. The humour swims in the stormy Bermuda triangle of postmodernism, puberty and parody and thematically the whole thing meanders from pseudo-philosophical in-the-shower thoughts to viral phenomena and internet culture to improper observations of society and everyday life. Live today!

Cheesecake Tasting
Watch out, CitySpotterGirl is about to drop a few calories into your mailbox ;-) Namely: limoncello, chocolate-coffee or vanilla-rice pudding cheesecake. Food blogger Marcel Drabits will participate with a delicious raspberry crumble version. Doesn't that sound tempting? Today, the Hotel Marriott is inviting guests to its Garden Café today to sample a selection of cheesecakes (first come, first served principle!) – including the house creation with violets. The tasting is free of charge, the cake with the best rating will then be added to the menu.

Independent Art Spaces
Vienna is primarily known for its historical museums – even actor John Krasinski recently expressed his admiration for them in an interview ;-) But what about all the other art besides Klimt, Wurm and so on? Well, you can mostly find it in the city's numerous small galleries and art spaces. And they are exactly what this weekend is all about! Around 50 venues, galleries and art spaces will be opening their doors for a city-wide open house featuring exhibitions, vernissages, guided tours, talks with curators, and meetings with artists. Cool!

Cinema on the Roof
With summer comes summer cinema! The relaxed open-air cinema on the roof of the main library trusts in good weather until 13 September and screens a variety of films, from cinematic highlights to international novelties. This year's programme is all about love and shows it in all its facets with films such as “In the Mood for Love”, “Call Me By Your Name” and “Only Lovers Left Alive”. So above the rooftops of the city and the roar of the Gürtel, the sky will glow in a rose-coloured light. Today we start with the preview of “Noch lange keine Lipizzaner”!

Judith Schimany
Astounding! Judith Schimany's paintings are so similar to Biedermeier art that at first glance, you might even mistake them for some of the Old Masters. Not abstract, not modern – but the plant and landscape paintings are full of meticulous attention to detail. As is fitting for the sun-kissed month of June, the artist will now be exhibiting her latest works at Spittelberg. These include lovingly composed watercolours of flowers that conjure up spring onto the wall, or painting of tropical-seeming, mystical landscapes. The vernissage will take place today!

The Women's Questions Show
“What about wrinkles and getting older? Which designer do you wear? And who looks after your child when they're ill?” Yes, it's always the same questions and us women are always expected to answer them. One of us has had enough and has been asking men the same questions for two years! Journalist Marie Lang has filled a successful podcast and a book with her question-and-answer game, and today she is taking stock live on stage. She delivers a mix of absurd facts, peculiar anecdotes and a live discussion. It's entertaining and eye-opening!

Shiki Boutique | Sakethek
It's like diving into another world: with the Shiki Boutique, restaurateur Joji Hattori, who already owns the nearby Shiki Fine Dining restaurant, has realised his new passion project: a boutique for Japanese craftsmanship with Sakethek. Minimalist furniture and room dividers exude elegant Japan vibes, while an array of treasures on the shelves sparkle at you: wooden lacquerware (so wafer-thin and light that it is mistaken for plastic), the finest porcelain, hand-forged knives and fans. Silk “Shikimonos” made from vintage Japanese kimonos can also be found here and traditional tastings await sake lovers. A unique concept in Vienna!

Mamas Cafe
An unusual project! A new coffee house has opened in the middle of the city centre and yet a bit hidden away. Single mothers, often with a migrant background, work here to get back into the job world. Located in the passageway between Stephansdom and Wollzeile, the large café is a social enterprise by the St Elisabeth Foundation. The service is exceptionally friendly, the decor is smart and the menu is small but delicious. Apart from cakes and pastries, the apple strudel porridge already has a fan base and creative sandwiches (with baba ganoush and vegetables, for example) satisfy larger appetites. Plus: All proceeds go back into the project.
