"Heya Girls!"
Great cinema under a starry sky! At the moment, projectors are being switched on on rooftops (Main Library), in parks (Augarten) and in squares (Rathaus, Volxkino) in Vienna at nightfall. From Monday, Karlsplatz will also join in the fun. In keeping with the urban flair of the festival, the programme kicks off with the documentary film “Urtoben – Vienna's illegal Artforms” by Bastian Brandstötter. It's all about urban exploration and the risky art of creating street art in hidden and forbidden places in Vienna. There will be music and live graffiti action before the performance. Karlsplatz, which has mutated from a former inner-city wasteland into one of the city's most exciting locations, will be the setting for KARLSkino from 7 July. For a fortnight, festival films, rarities and documentaries will be shown on the square in front of the Karlskirche. All for free – plus concerts. That's how I like summer in the city!
Wishing you a peaceful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Travel – Artists on the move
Perfect for the holiday season: The current Albertina exhibition highlights the artistic wanderlust of the 18th and 19th centuries. Whether lured by ancient buildings and landscapes under the southern sun, the local mountains or the countryside around Vienna, travelling offered artists of the time plenty of inspiration. Works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Caspar David Friedrich, Jakob Alt, Thomas Ender and Tina Blau, for example, are on display, sometimes as drawings, then as vivid watercolours. Also a great insight into travelling conditions at the time!
Albertina, Albertinaplatz 1, 1010 Vienna. Daily 10:00 to 18:00, Wed+Fri until 21:00. 19,90 €. Web

Samara Joy
To be compared with singing greats such as Ella Fitzgerald or Carmen McRae at the age of just 25 is certainly very impressive! And this is the case with Samara Joy. The New Yorker is one of the greatest jazz voices of our time having won an impressive five Grammys to date! No wonder, because her versatile, velvety voice is absolutely mesmerising. Samara already caused a sensation on the stage of the Wiener Konzerthaus back in 2022, and today she will return to our favourite city to perform a number of musical gems from her new album “ Portrait”!

VinziRast-mittendrin Afterwork
Bags, trays and tequila sunrise – the motto alone puts you in a good mood! There are plenty of places to celebrate afterwork in Vienna, but this one offers you the chance to get involved in a good cause as well as partying: Because in addition to snacks, drinks and good vibes, VinziRast-mittendrin also organises a fine market as part of its VinziRast Chance project. People who are currently in the asylum process create handmade bags, pouches and trays that can be shopped here. DJ Handtricks will be providing the right beats for that today!

Freitag Rent
Possession-averse travel fans will love this! Because: travelling bags are notoriously expensive, take up a lot of space in your home and are rarely used. That's why the “F512 Voyager” travel rucksack from Freitag is now available to rent instead of buy. For a basic price of 24€, you can call it your own for four days and to keep everything nice and hygienic, the rental rucksack has a removable inner lining that is cleaned after each rental. Also funny: a travel diary to record car breakdowns, holiday romances and food poisonings is also included ;-)

Epochenwanderer
What could horses possibly be doing in a church? Are house concert evenings always about music? What are the foundations of St Stephen's Cathedral? And which Viennese mayor was quartered? On today's Vienna tour by Epochenwanderer, you will get to know the city centre in a different way – the way it used to be. With three actors, who slip into seven different character roles, you will be listening to stories from different eras as you are going on a tour of the past from Minoritenplatz to St Stephen's Cathedral. Fascinating!

Girlfriends' Day at the Klimt Villa
A nice Sunday outing for Gustav groupies! At today's Girlfriends' Day at the Klimt Villa in Hietzing, you can meet the painter's great-granddaughter, fashion designer Brigitte Huber, who will enrich the curator's tour with anecdotes and photos from the family history. Afterwards, you can sip a glass of sparkling wine in the salon. It's also a wonderful way to stroll through the beautifully renovated rooms of his very last place of work. The Klimt Villa itself has quite a varied history and served as the painter's studio and place of work until his death in 1918.

Sommer Rhapsodie
Admittedly, the ambiance in the historic Liechtenstein Garden Palace is atmospheric in itself. But at today's festival opening, four voices in particular bring the Italian spirit to life: Monika Ballwein, Christian Deix, Rene Velazquez-Diaz, and Erik Arno, together as “Insieme”, whet your appetite for your next Italian vacation with hits like “Volare”, “Azzuro”, and “Insieme”. For the first time this year, the Markterei Markthalle also offers a variety of culinary treats, like today: variations of sustainably farmed Kremstal shrimp – goes great with the maritime Italo theme!

Learn Spanish outdoors
What does “Learning is much easier in sunshine and fresh summer air!” mean in Spanish? Perhaps we will learn that today! Because as part of the LAI summer courses you get to practice the full beauty of the Spanish language outside in a nature setting. The short course consists of six units and teaches the most important basics, allowing you to easily introduce yourself in Spanish, ask for information, and hold simple conversations. Good to know: If the group members continue to show interest, a multi-unit follow-up course can be arranged. Vamos!

Kulka: Loos Student and Successor
He was a pioneer of modern architecture and spatial planning: Heinrich Kulka was born in Litovel and began his architectural studies at the Vienna University of Technology. At the same time, he attended Adolf Loos's private building school and soon became his partner. The new exhibition is dedicated to Kulka's independent work before his emigration. In addition to several Viennese works from the period before 1938, the focus is mainly on his buildings realized in Bohemia, which impressively highlight his talent for spatial planning in particular. Worth seeing!

Ladies first
Women in music – commonplace today, but a tough struggle in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Nevertheless, outstanding female talents emerged from this era, and the Trio Van Beethoven dedicates its Summer Rhapsody performance to them. It's all spots on Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn, who was strongly discouraged by her father from pursuing a career as a pianist, yet still composed an impressive 460 works. Pieces by Rebecca Clarke, who in 1907 became the first woman to enter the composition class at the Royal College of Music, are also performed. See, ladies first ;-)

Paint & Sip
Summer in the city! You have to admit one thing, the summers here in Vienna are so stunningly beautiful that a vacation in the south is almost unnecessary. The many leisure activities contribute to this, such as the summer program at the Schani hotels. Things are getting creative today at the Schani Salon on Mariahilferstraße, for instance! At “Paint & Sip”, you can sip a glass of wine (or a cup of aromatic herbal tea) and let your inspiration run wild on the canvas. No prior experience is necessary; under professional guidance, everyone can become an artist for an evening!

Singulär
The small alleys of Spittelberg already have a very special atmosphere, but the upper part of Stuckgasse has been exuding pure holiday magic for the past few months! It's all thanks to Elena, who opened her maritime ceramics kilo shop here. The friendly Andalusian sells tableware from small manufacturers in Spain and Andalusia – all handmade and lovingly selected. That's why espresso cups, bowls, mugs, and the like can be mixed and matched so wonderfully. Almost everything here is paid for by weight, and Elena's mom also designs colorful ikat tablecloths and charming lampshades for styling the table. We love!

Freiherz
Because you can only handle eating out right now in a shady garden anyway, the opening of Freiherz came just in time. When weary, you can take a break in the airy inner yard of the Altes AKH – because Freiherz is now where the Stiegl Ambulance used to be. A huge outdoor dining area and a huge barbecue put you in a summer mood. Although they also serve schnitzel and veggie dishes, the grilled chicken from the Josper charcoal grill and the BBQ ribs from their own smoker taste really good. And of course there are lots of creative beers to go with it. What's more, the interior has also been smartly renovated – just in case it ever gets cooler again.
