editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Usually, you have to travel to central Burgenland in order to head into the blue. Because thanks to the Koó family, marvellous blue print fabrics are still produced in Steinberg today using real indigo, ancient models and a top-secret recipe. They are dyed in large vats (and not printed as the name suggests), treated in the most elaborate way and dried for weeks. In Austria, blue printing is now a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. But indigo is also an integral part of culture in other countries. In Korea, for example, indigo blue – Jjokbit – is one of the country's five traditional colours and acts as a kind of cultural DNA. Until the end of the month, the Korea Cultural Centre is presenting a small but very fine exhibition about indigo in both countries – about the traditional art of indigo dyeing and the beauty of the fabrics. If you want, you can even do some dyeing yourself in a computer game ;-)

Wishing you a blue week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Korea Kulturzentrum, Krugerstraße 1, 1010 Vienna. Until 28 March Mon-Fri 13:30 to 17:30. Free entry. Web

P.S. For blue print fans: On 4 May there is a dyers' market in Gutau in Mühlviertel.

Architecture Festival: Turn On
Climate crisis, economic crisis, political crisis... where’s the positive in all this? This year's architecture festival tries to answer this question. For 3 days, it’s all about the crisis as an upheaval in architecture and building culture. Today and tomorrow, for example, with talks on the interface between business and architecture. On Saturday, it's all about “conversion and further construction” – from the creative transformation of a prefab building in the GDR to delicate redesigns of existing buildings in the middle of the Bregenzerwald or the refurbishment of the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin. Interesting!

twen: The magazine of the 60s
Provocative, sensual, new! At the end of the 1950s, a magazine burst onto the stuffy German-language magazine market: twen. The black-covered magazine focused on hedonism, sexual liberation, consumerism and youth culture. It shaped the cultural thinking of an entire generation, was a steppingstone for young talents such as Charlotte March and Christa Peters, and was the forerunner of titles such as “The Face”, “Vice” and “Der Wiener”. The masterpiece by art director Willy Fleckhaus is currently presented at WestLicht with more than 120 photographs, double-page spreads and magazine covers. Today is the vernissage!

Hotel Party with Femme Maison
Dancing queens, get ready: Here we all get sparkling disco balls in our eyes! Femme Maison founder Franziska Fürpass-Kermani felt like dancing again, but she didn't have the right events. That's why the 70s lover simply took over the festivity planning herself and transformed the Hotel am Brilliantengrund into a stylish dancefloor for one night! The party will attract those who shout “Vive la danse!” the most, because with beats by Sexy Deutsch & Gina Brandlmayr, framed by Brilliantengrund retro vibes, one thing is clear: There will be dancing all night long!

Jewish Women as Saviours
CitySpotterGirl's daughter is in Vienna today for a change and gives a lecture on her doctoral thesis, a long-neglected topic in Holocaust research: the rescue of Jews by Jewish women. The absolute majority of rescue operations in France, for example, were carried out by Jewish women. These included social workers and wealthy baronesses who used their money and influence for relief operations. It was more dangerous for Jewish women who voluntarily (!) allowed themselves to be imprisoned in French camps to organise rescue from within, as well as for border smugglers.

Do it wrong correctly!
Instead of immediately categorising mistakes as “terribly bad experiences”, you can actually draw a lot of creativity from them – at least that’s artist Artist Michaela Obertscheider’s approach. And this is exactly what she wants to introduce in today's workshop. With improvisation theatre for more spontaneity, inspiring acting lessons for a relaxed posture, exercises for storytelling and getting to know your inner critical voice, the usability of small, subtle mistakes for more creativity, productivity and teamwork will be developed.

Vulva-Impression-Session
Many of us look at it little or not at all, yet it is so pretty, our vulva! So much so that you can create a very personal work of art from it. In the workshop series by artist Gloria Dimmel, you can immortalise your genital area in plaster (on five different dates) and later hang it decoratively on the wall. Gloria will guide you step by step through the production process and wants to use this creative approach to make this often shameful area more visible. PS: For those who prefer to express themselves artistically in a more intimate setting – individual appointments can also be booked ;-)

While nothing is right in the world, people are overwhelmed, have no future, but discuss “what is normal”, Mini and Miki try to fit in and do everything right. Nevertheless, they are pursued by dangers and monsters, by catastrophes and difficulties. In this horror of everyday life, they are drawn into weird adventures and fight for their piece of happiness. It is about the big and small nightmares of the middle class, about the abyss that opens up every day. Minihorror is the theatre version of the book of the same name by Barbi Markovic!

Crème de la Crème – La petite
It's really small, but that doesn't matter – the main thing is that it's close to our editorial office! Julia Kilarski's wonderful Pattiserie in Lange Gasse has got a new sibling. The former sweets paradise of Eduard Fruth now serves the city's famous tarts and desserts. Tarte au citron, pistachio dacquoise and torta caprese: visual works of art, melt-in-your-mouth flavours. There's also breakfast and savoury quiches! Of course, “La petite” is also lovingly and stylishly decorated, the floral creations in particular look sensational. And the elegant crockery was produced by mum.
