"Heya Girls!"
For the next week, you will probably have to do without sleep and private appointments! For the Vienna Design Week is in town, and is shaking things up with exciting exhibitions, workshops and side events! This year's festival headquarters is just around the corner from CitySpotterGirl on Wiedner Hauptstraße (hurray!) – namely, in the halls of an abandoned car dealership. The festival café there is run by the people from Karma Food, the city's most famous curry dealers (hurray again!). From Wieden, you can whizz through the city – over 200 special exhibitions, open studios, pop-ups, and tours throughout the city invite you to make aesthetic discoveries. The central exhibition “Design Everyday” focuses on the design of everyday objects, feinedinge celebrates 20 years of porcelain manufacturing with an exhibition and a dinner. And the Stadtholz association is organizing workshops in which objects are created from felled diseased city trees. I'd say: a full program!

Wishing you a wild week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 2025 Chiharu Shiota
The Line
It can define shapes, structure surfaces, trace contours and boundaries, connect and separate – and even describe entire worlds: the line. Based on Paul Klee's poetic metaphor of a “little journey,” the current exhibition at the Heidi Horten Collection examines the line’s full potential: from spontaneous sketches to precise constructions, from works on paper to expansive interventions. Another highlight is the installation by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, woven from hundreds of thank-you letters from museum visitors and floating through the exhibition space. Eye-catching!

Maku
Autumn always makes us feel a little melancholic... Fortunately, there's something that reliably lifts our spirits at every change of season: shopping! And at Maku's “Lederliebe” pop-up store, you can spice up your wardrobe for the golden season today. True to the motto “MakeUseNotWaste,” the label creates beautiful shoppers, slippers, and gilets from scraps and leftovers from the leather industry. Some items have a metallic shine, while others come at us with a fluffy zebra print. And with more subtle tones such as liquorice black or brown bear brown, even men can find slipper happiness here ;-)

 Markterei
Alles Leberkäse
There are fast food options that are always popular – and Leberkäse is definitely one of them! Today, Markterei will be demonstrating just how versatile this meaty snack can be. There, it nestles between rolls, and comes sometimes porky, then beefy, and is flavoured with El Pimiento Rojo, carbonara, currywurst, tomato scamorza, jalapeño cheddar, goat cheese thyme, or Chicago style. And even completely meat-free, it tastes delicious: as Chili Tschiiis Gustl from the Pflanzerei. Finding a favourite won't be easy, so bring enough time to feast ;-)

Amidou Koita & Jorossin
West African rhythms paired with funk, reggae, Afrobeat, and salsa groove – that's what defines the music of Amidou Koita and his band Jorossin. As a member of a traditional griot family, Amidou enjoys providing deep insights into West African traditions. Lyrics in the Bwamou and Dioula languages, paired with modern musical styles, create forward-looking soundscapes, accompanied today by Viennese guitarist Beate Reiermann and backing vocals by Nicole Kiruka. Before that, two singers from the a cappella ladies' group Sualia will perform!

 Stroke Minigolf
Stroke Minigolf
Hopelessly old-fashioned, yet also totally retro-chic: mini golf has a lot to offer! Especially at the brand-new Stroke course in the 21st district. The rules are as classic as the game itself: The ball must reach the target in as few strokes as possible. Anyone who takes more than six strokes receives a penalty point, and small obstacles in the form of white bunkers make it even more challenging. But you have plenty of time to practice, because one entry means unlimited tee shots! The Stroke course is also nicely designed – reason enough to go, right?

Meal Prepping
We are all familiar with this: You come home from work and just don't have the energy for anything other than slouching on the couch – and then your stomach starts growling. An unhealthy burger would solve the problem in a few minutes. But that's over now! In their workshop, integrative nutrition experts Petra Paumann and Nadja Sonnenschein show you how to conjure up healthy meals for several days without spending hours in the kitchen. The menu includes: soup from a jar, savory muffins, granola bars, and apple-nut pancakes. Sounds delicious, right?

Snoresville in the frozen patches? As if! Delicacies like pink kale, green pak choi, or leaf mustard flourish in the winterly cold as well. This means: The start of the next vegetable season is right now! If we want to harvest fresh greens in winter with frost and snow, we have to start planting now. And that's why City Farm Augarten is once again hosting the Vienna Winter Vegetable Young Plant Market. Over two days, they sell winter-hardy greens such as garden lettuces, arugula, dock, spinach and winter purslane. Because autumn is the spring of winter ;-)

The Voices of the Animals
A tarantula dances to the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and ten fingers evoke the sound of a spider's web. An electronically amplified solo violin chirps like birdsong, and with Alexei Igudesman, Austria's most humorous composer, you venture into a zoo full of cheerful animals: Funny Animals. The evening is rounded off by “Ferdinand the Bull” by Alain Ridout – the story of a bull unwilling to fight, who prefers a peaceful life amidst the blooming flowers of the arena. A musical animal welfare campaign, so to speak, designed to open our eyes to the changes in the animal kingdom. Beautiful!

Shattered Memories at Semmering
Expropriation, expulsion and murder of Jews – common practice during the Nazi era, even at Semmering. And, as Richard Weihs' research shows, even 80 years after the end of the reign of terror, it has still not been comprehensively documented. In his second volume on the curious stories of the spa region, he places particular emphasis on the multifaceted description of Semmering by predominantly Jewish writers and journalists. Scandals and malversations as well as political disputes are documented. Today, Richard Weihs will be there presenting his book!

Maiija / Sweet Sweet Moon
What is Marilies Jagsch doing now? With the debut album I AM from her new project Maiija, the musician gives us an answer that raises many questions. “I am not who you think I am. I could be anyone,” says the accompanying text to the album – and that's exactly what makes I AM so exciting. The songs tell of inner conflicts, of the pressure to live up to expectations, of the attempt to free oneself from them, and of how all this affects relationships and self-image. In today's double concert, she brings multi-instrumentalist Matthias Frey, aka Sweet Sweet Moon, on stage with her!

There is no sign and no indication – not surprising, though, since it's called “Hidden Brunch.” Just climb the stairs to the next floor at the Bierometer restaurant and you'll find yourself in Vienna's newest breakfast hotspot. In a pleasant atmosphere, unusual dishes are served instead of coffee-croissants-classic: “Pitaliscious,” for example, handmade pita with grilled chicken breast, onion, and yogurt cream.
