"Heya Girls!"
Yes, here it comes rolling in – the annual flood of Christmas markets in Vienna. But one new market clearly stands out from the crowd this year. Forget the “quiet” season: Xmas Winterstories at Schwarzenbergplatz is officially bringing a funky vibe to advent in Vienna. From 13 November, it's “NOT the same procedure as every year!” Instead of Last Christmas playing on repeat, you can enjoy superhits from the 1980s and '90s, and instead of freezing your toes off, you can relax in a heated tent lounge with a disco jungle theme and DJs. Those who prefer to stay outside can enjoy ten street-food stalls and mulled wine stalls offering flavours ranging from Vienna to Mexico to India. There will also be hot cocktails to warm you up without making you feel like you're in a ski lodge. The opening on Thursday will feature live acts and lots of good vibes, plus punch for only 2€ from 15:00 to 18:00. So now we have a winter market for everyone who prefers to spell “cosy” with groove.
Wishing you a hopeful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Marc Scibilia
His songs have been used for Apple TV, the hit series “About a Boy”, and even a Jeep Super Bowl commercial, among other things, and Marc Scibilia has amassed 1.5 million followers on social media in just one year. We think: That’s honestly no surprise! The Buffalo-born singer-songwriter, who's almost never seen without his guitar, creates a distinctly American sound with his smooth voice and a mix of folk, country, and pop anthems – a sound that is both melancholic and hopeful. Today he will be performing live from his latest album “More to This“.

If you'd rather use the time before the big shopping frenzy to look for filling material for gift wrapping, the Fish & More Design Market is the place to go. Four Viennese labels will be showcasing their craftsmanship – from jewellery and fashion pieces made from vintage kimonos to quirky fish-shaped bags from fish & More and photographs by Natascha Auenhammer, the selection is colourful and unusual. So This Is Vienna!
What do Johann Strauss's “Die Fledermaus” and a silent film from the 1920s have in common? At toxic dreams, they are transformed into a wild contemporary revue featuring swapping spouses, erotic romance novels, champagne-fuelled dance balls and mistaken imprisonment. Drawing inspiration from Ernst Lubitsch's film So This Is Paris, which is based on the same theatrical material that served as the basis for Strauss's most famous operetta, a parallel Viennese universe unfolds amidst expressive dance, prison cells, and champagne intoxication – a Lubitsch-Strauss mashup of a special kind!

Talk with Erika Freeman
“Don't make yourself important, make yourself right” – and that from a 98-year-old! The eminent psychoanalyst Dr. Erika Freeman is simply amazing! As a Jew, she had to flee to New York at the age of 12, where she became a celebrated psychoanalyst. Many different politicians and Hollywood stars have lain on her couch and sought her advice. Today, she will talk about miracles and love, about hope instead of worry, her work and companions, and the secret behind not taking yourself too seriously, but behaving correctly. How inspiring!

Central American Film Festival
Those who are still basking in memories of the Viennale can head straight to the next film festival. Films from Central America are far too rarely shown in this country, anyway. This year, the festival is dedicated to the struggles and realities of people who are marginalized because of their origin or gender. Tomorrow, two documentaries will focus on this year's guest country, Haiti, and today the festival will be kicked off with the drama “Vertices” about three old friends who meet again at a funeral after almost three decades and reflect on life.

Katrin Iskam
She is notorious, unique and definitely a bit crazy. She doesn't have THE green thumb, she actually has two. We are talking about Katrin Iskam, of course, a trained nurse and the hottest discovery on the local gardening scene. She now lives in the Lüneburg Heath, where her garden is located – the origin of all her creative Katrinsgarten constructions and the seed of countless stories (like the time she almost ended up at the police station after rescuing some snails at night. ;-) Today, Katrin will be serving up lots of practical tips and at least as many funny anecdotes live!

Daruma: Saint & Lucky Charm
The Daruma is one of the most popular good luck charms in Japan. It is said to encourage people to persevere in any situation, and is often sold in Buddhist temples. The Japanese Information and Cultural Centre's current exhibition showcases the many facets of this little figure. On display is a variety of Daruma figures from different regions and in different forms – from classic papier-mâché dolls to toys and modern interpretations, supplemented by historical images. Mercato del Tartufo
Just writing about this makes our mouths water... Today at Pastamara, it will be all about these precious tubers. At an in-house truffle market, gourmets can seek advice from truffle expert Miliffico and 2-Michelin-star chef Ciccio Sultano. This will then be followed by a truffle-heavy seven-course menu, and the best part about it is that you can top your gnocco made from pork and squid, veal tail with candied fruit or apple and potato tarte tatin, for instance, with your choice of tubers selected at the market. Delizioso!

Susan Wolf
She is not only talented, but also a truly inspiring person! Austrian singer-songwriter Susan Wolf was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 23 and fought her way back into life through self-healing and mental work. She has processed this experience in her new album, “Gold” – which features a blend of her signature Americana folk style and elements of 1960s soul. After years of leading a secluded life in the Alps, “Gold” marks her radiant new beginning, which you can experience live tonight. It's very emotional!

Smart Map of Jewish History
The cities of Vienna, St. Pölten, Eisenstadt and Bratislava, as well as the regions in which these cities are located, are linked by a long shared Jewish history. The Smart Map of Jewish History is a digital tool currently under development that uses digitised material, innovative e-tools and 3D visualisations to make stories – and history – legible and narratable. Today, the sections of the project covering Vienna and Lower Austria will be presented, along with the first digital implementations – including “walk-through” 3D models. Exciting!

Paul
It's funny that extra-fine baked goods are called “viennoiseries” in France, meaning Viennese pastries. The popularity of Viennese sweets in France began in 1839 when Austrian August Zang opened the Boulangerie Viennoise. In 1889, a Mr Mayot founded his bakery near Lille, which began its triumphant advance with viennoiseries. The Paul bakery now has branches in 40 countries. And since last week, one in Vienna. Right next to the Hundertwasser House, strawberry tarts and éclairs are served in 3 pleasantly furnished rooms, along with quiches and sandwiches. Not too unusual, but at least with some Parisian flair.
