"Heya Girls!"
When the square in front of Rathaus is a hectic setup site and you can feel a certain crackle in the May air, it can only mean one thing: the Festwochen are about to start! And on Friday the big opening is happening on Rathausplatz. The show that has long since become a tradition is very, very feminine this time – it’s about great women in music: female composers, female instrumentalists, female performers. From chanson to rap, from Wienerlied to pop hit, the focus on the stage is on the wonderful women of the native music scene, Clara Luzia, Soap&Skin and EsRap, among others. Actresses Katharina Strasser and Birgit Denk, too, chime their musical statements on the state of the nation. This time, the opening’s artistic manager is director Mirjam Unger and she wants the evening to be understood as a political statement as well: all artists on the stage are a collective representing peaceful new times without hate and fear. Powerful! And all that for free.
Wishing you a festive week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Wildling Pop Up
So, has anyone here heard about Wildling Shoes before? These runners are super comfy – and the whole team of Rita bringt’s was recently equipped with these shoes for test purposes. If you, too, would like to try what it feels like to walk practically “barefoot”, a pop-up store offers the chance to look and buy today. The minimal sole of the Wilds with its maximum flexibility makes it possible to feel the ground, which turns the movement while walking into a real experience. No wonder, with the sole being inspired by Japanese ninja boots. Made of ecological material!

Vienna City Gallery Walk
The plan for today: put on some comfy shoes and get going to an inner-city hiking day on the tracks of art! Because around 40 galleries in the 1st district open their doors from 16:00 to 21:00 and offer art, guided tours and vernissages. And there is much to be discovered! From Joanna Gleich’s colourful pictures titled Colourspell to new design by Wiener Silber Manufactur and Rosemarie Benedikt’s original glass animals. And a performance in the form of a procession leading from the Neidhart frescos to the Neidhart grave. Now that sounds promising!

Tamino
You could almost fall in love with this young man. At least with the melancholic voice of the 21-year-old Tamino. In songs like his debut hit Habibi, the musician from Belgium makes oriental influences blend together with alternative pop/rock rhythms. The result cannot be put into a category but definitely seduces you into dreaming. For his new album Amir, he worked together with a group of musicians consisting of Syrian and Iraqi refugees. This penchant for Arabic music is not a coincidence, by the way: Tamino’s grandfather was the Egyptian film star and singer Muharram Fouad.

New Tel Aviv Beach Opening Party
Traditionally, the summer season in Vienna is opened at Donaukanal, unofficially. And those who want to see and be seen must not miss the yearly Opening Party on Tel Aviv Beach under any circumstances. You come for the ambiance, for the relaxed party mood, and also a bit for the Israeli street food by Neni, which has long since become famous. Plus, they are celebrating the new enlargement of the beach area ( double the space) and the lease extension by 10 years with a live band. Apparently, it will be 20 degrees on Friday, prognosis: it’s going to be full!

The Jewish Cemetery Währing
For many people, this is still one of Vienna’s unknown gems: the Jewish Cemetery in Währing. It was left to decay for a long time, now the politicians in charge have finally managed to come to an agreement on the matter of renovation, fortunately. Today, you have the rare opportunity to get to know the cemetery in the course of a competently guided tour. Not once but twice (at 11:00 and at 13:00), Brigitte Kenscha-Mautner leads through the cultural landmark with its long and thrilling history. Please bring sturdy shoes and do sign up.

Sun, Moon and Stars
When the Mondscheinbrüder meet Lady Sunshine, the stars light up brightly. This evening takes you into space in quite a humorous way. As scientific support: Werner Gruber, co-founder of the “Science Busters”, who will use the most modern planetarium of the universe (and beyond that!) to explain things that would have even Mr Spock wriggle his ears. The fitting spheres sounds are contributed by the singing audience in the form of folk songs and evergreens. So: what no ear has heard or seen before becomes a reality here. Not just for stargazers ;-)

Award-Winning Short Films
Thanks to the internet, short films are becoming more and more popular. The effect they have on a big cinema screen, however, is something else entirely – that’s why Stadtkino shows 3 short films today that were nominated for the Austrian Film Award. And that for free! It starts with the winner “Entschuldigung, Ich Suche Den Tischtennisraum Und Meine Freundin”. The drama “Bester Mann” is about right-wing extremism and won the Max-Ophüls-Award, and “Virgin Woods/ Zalesie” takes you into the daydreams of an 11-year-old girl. Afterwards: discussion with the film teams.

Fluchtwege
Usally, individual fates of refugees are barely represented in the media. Avjeen wanted to become a doctor in Syria. Shekib worked in a hospital of Doctors Without Borders in Afghanistan, which was bombed and destroyed. Both had to flee their home countries and now live in Austria. A multimedia exhibition by “Doctors Without Borders” puts the focus on these two people and captures their stories – you get a very personal, touching insight into the biographies that talk about having to flee your home, about old homes and a new life.

Reise in den Schoßraum
Eva Teja send interested ladies on a journey for one night that doesn’t even require you to move. On the contrary: it’s a journey to the inside, the centre of femininity, the realm of the womb. The guided meditation leads to the uterus and makes images appear in front of the inner eye. Every woman experiences this particular meditation differently, but the positive effect is mutual. The journey to the womb deepens the connection to yourself and can be considered a “ check-in” on a mental-, health- and emotional level. Afterwards, you can exchange “travel reports”.

Choir: I can (not) sing!
Everybody can sing! At least that’s what this 6-week-course of VHS Penzing promises. You probably won’t turn into a chamber singer but essentially, singing is meant to achieve only one thing, namely to bring happiness. Usually, the hardest part is the first step of bringing yourself to go despite being completely unmusical. This is done best in a group of same-minded people and with simple songs like La-le-lu or I am sailing. The result is usually the realisation ‘Oh, it does work after all’ or ‘The others are actually much worse’. Please definitely sign up.

Cyclist + Eugen21
The recently opened Andaz may be a luxury lifestyle-hotel, but around it, the construction site craziness is raging on, from the train station all the way to Quartier Belvedere. If you don’t mind the view of excavators, you can treat yourself to a healthy lunch there (at neat prices) starting this week. Motto: witty-stylish cyclist atmosphere, self-service and lots of vegetables! If you prefer it a bit fancier, you can go to Eugen21 next-door. It’s like a modern Wirtshaus, where the service crew members wear jeans despite the elegant furniture and introduce themselves by their first names to every guest. Good cuisine but higher prices.
