"Heya Girls!"
It's done! The entrance area to Ottilie, my seminar centre in a 500-year-old house in the Waldviertel region, has also finally been renovated. And this autumn, you can join me in diving into the world of books at my seminars! I founded the Wundergarten publishing house 15 years ago and also write books for other publishers – now I am passing on my extensive knowledge as a publisher and author. Over the course of a weekend, I will show you how to bring your book into the world, exploring everything from traditional publishing to self-publishing. Lilly Maier – successful author, historian, and CitySpotterGirl’s daughter – also teaches at Ottilie and will give a two-day writing seminar on the topic of “Writing Family History(ies).” With writing exercises for inspiration and ease and instructions for research. All courses are suitable for experienced writers as well as beginners. And then, the two of us will spend a weekend together, teaching you tricks on how to promote your book. So, ladies, sign up! I look forward to seeing you!
Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

coal mine birds
In the 1890s, canaries were taken into coal mines to detect carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases. Hence the title of the new piece by the renowned Viennese dance company Liquid Loft and the ensemble for new music Phace. With ten performers and five musicians who merge body, sound, and object into a ghostly variation on a ballroom evening, the ImpulsTanz Special is aimed at all those “coal mine birds” who can sense the uncertainty of the near future and its threats more precisely than most of us. Definitely a different kind of musical theatre. Today will be the premiere!

European Day of Restoration
Turn old into new is today's motto. On European Day of Restoration, art lovers, craft enthusiasts, and anyone who would like to find out how beautiful old things can be spruced up again will be amazed. At the Wien Museum, you can discover the superpower of wall painting on several days: stencilling! The Weltmuseum reveals what kinds of montages are hidden in the exhibition “Who wears the pants?” and at the Kunsthistorisches Museum you can learn more about the conservation of carriages from the Imperial Carriage Collection. 100 Years of Hits
Anyone here who likes Schlager music? Even if you're not exactly a die-hard fangirl, hits like “Griechischer Wein”, “Rote Lippen”, and “Aber bitte mit Sahne” always put people in a good mood – and you can happily sing along to these kinds of songs, too ;-) In any case, Bela Koreny has put together a first-class Hits Evening for today, which will be offering exciting insights into the period from 1920 to 2020. He will be supported by Lilian Klebow, Karl Markovics, and Caroline Frank, among others. And one thing is certain: you'll be taking one or two ear worms home with you ;-)

Punschkatzerl Pop-up
Christine Bellersen-Kühn usually designs cheerful pictures and little pieces of jewellery made from glass beads in her studio wuwu. One day, while she was eating a punch doughnut, it suddenly grew ears. Her cat had sat down right behind the punch doughnut – and Christine immediately captured the funny scene with her brush and paint. Thus, the “Punschkatzerl” (punch cats) were born, and now adorn postcards, pillows, shirts, magnets, and soaps. You can shop this amusing merchandise until tomorrow at Gumperia. And what else is there? Delicious Punschkrapfen, of course!

Angelika Hager: Polly Adler crime novel
The Crémant specialist and diva assoluta of the Rabenhof has written her first crime novel! Castle stars Stefanie Reinsperger and Sebastian Wendelin rock the first Polly Adler crime novel together: “Pardon, but there's a dead body floating in the chocolate.” In a fast-paced and hilarious manner, Polly creator Angelika Hager sends call boys, opera ball anarchists, tattoo parlour operators, a sex-addicted woman chancellor, a police inspector with a face like an unmade bed, and her disaster-prone column protagonist hurtling through Vienna's high society. Really funny!

Shops with A History
H&M, Calzedonia, and the like are nestled together in seemingly every alley. Fortunately, though, there are still a few loners with heart and soul. From pleats workshops to candy stores, Philipp Graf and Martin Frey have been photographing these traditional businesses since 2009. They have now transformed the more than 500 images into eight film portraits of unique people and their businesses, which are now being shown in Austria's oldest cinema, the Breitenseer Lichtspiele. Plus: Selected photographs will be on display at Cafe El Speta until mid-November!

Anna Katarina
Her music thrives in a place where retro pop meets indie rock and cuddles up to hints of country and soul. Currently hailed as one of Canada's most exciting new artists, Anna Katarina's sound evokes the warmth of Laurel Canyon and the rough charm of 90s FM radio: vintage sounds frame catchy melodies and emotional stories. She's often compared to icons like Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, and Jewel, but her voice is unmistakably unique. If you don't believe it, you can check it out for yourself tonight, because then you can hear Anna sing live at the Loop!

Cezanne, Monet, Renoir
Hard to imagine, but once Monet, Pissarro and Gauguin were complete nobodies in certain places. In Switzerland, for instance. It wasn't until around 1908 that these artists gained recognition, when the industrialist couple Jenny and Sidney Brown started one of the most important collections of French Impressionism. Since 1990, their Villa Langmatt has been open to the public as a museum, but is currently undergoing renovation. Lucky for us, because during this time, the Belvedere has borrowed highlights from the collection, and we can admire them here in Vienna!

Bone Health & Longevity
Bones are the pillars of our body – and far more than just a topic for orthopaedic surgeons! They are central to an active and independent life because mobility is key to quality of life. A fall in old age can have fatal consequences, ranging from fractures to loss of independence. Osteoporosis is the greatest risk factor. Bone loss begins gradually from the age of 30, and this disease affects millions, often without being noticed. Today's Power Talk with the Soul Sisters is all about how to keep your bones healthy and strong for a long time!

Rathaus Wien
Vienna City Hall: the city's landmark, a mirror to its history, a stage for political debates, the largest government building, and the most important venue for celebrations and representation of the Viennese bourgeoisie. To mark the 200th birthday of its architect, Friedrich von Schmidt, the Vienna Library dedicates a special exhibition to City Hall. Drawings, photographs, books, and furnishings are on display, conveying its complex history of construction and use. The highlights are Schmidt's designs. Discover Brigittenau
True, Brigittenau isn't the hippest district – but it's historically truly interesting! On a guided tour, you can explore the hidden side of the 20th district. Once upon a time, this area was home to one of Vienna's most famous entertainment hotspots, with attractions like the “Russian Slingshot” and the “Turkish Throw”, as well as dance pavilions. One of Vienna's oldest means of mass transit was located here as early as 1840, as well as one of its most beautiful train stations, which was later used as the “Snow Palace”. The district was also a centre for Jewish immigrants, as vividly described by the writer Joseph Roth.

Cafe O’pal
The word that probably best describes O’pal is: generous. First of all, there are the premises. This charming café spans two spacious rooms with metre-high ceilings, which appear even brighter than they already are thanks to the large windows. So there’s no need to feel claustrophobic here. And secondly, there are the portions. The Viennese trend of recent months of serving smaller and smaller portions for more and more money has not arrived here. Whether breakfast or lunch, you will be full. The house speciality is buckwheat pancakes: 11 different galettes and 10 crepes bring French flair to Kandlgasse. A feel-good café!
