"Heya Girls!"
She was the poet of the Wiener Werkstätte and one of the most remarkable artists of the turn of the century. She had stars land on glasses by Josef Hoffmann and called her fabric pattern design, which you can see this time as wallpaper in the margin of the newsletter, “Nelkenduft”. Felice Rix-Ueno created hundreds of design drawings for the Wiener Werkstätte, primarily for fabrics, but also for wallpaper, embroidery, enamel work, fashion and home accessories, toys and commercial graphic design. In 1925, “Lizzi”, as she called herself, who came from a Jewish Viennese family, married the Japanese architect Isaburo Ueno, who worked as an assistant to Josef Hoffmann. She moved to Kyoto with him and succeeded in her second home country of Japan as a university professor and founder of her own design institute. From Tuesday, the MAK is dedicating its first solo exhibition outside Japan to this unusual designer. In “Stars, Feathers, Tassels”, around 200 objects show the colourful work of a woman who is hardly known here.

Wishing you a poetic week,

 Mary Broadcast
Mary Broadcast
From jazz to blues, to soul, to pop and now indie pop rock. Sometimes good things take time and in the case of Mary Broadcast and her band, a lot of trial and error. But what the ensemble now produces on electro sound, piano, acoustic guitar, bass and drums is not only pleasing to the ear, but also really profound. The new EP “Panic” tells the painfully inspiring story of a woman who has to reorganise her world after a miscarriage. Today, Upper Austrian Mary is presenting a mix from the last few years for the first time and, if you’d like to practise vibing along, please click here!

X-Press Art Burgenland
Anyone looking for an unusual Christmas present should make their way to the MuseumsQuartier today. Because the designforum is bringing together 70 artists from Burgenland to exhibit 1,000 graphic art works. Okay, not too unusual so far, but here it comes: Each of the works can be purchased directly on site and none of them will jump into your shopping bag for more than €500! The creators themselves can be found in the wine lounge, where the finest Burgenland wines are waiting to be savoured. Art shopping with a twist – we love it!

Vienna Art Week
If you want to know what's currently happening in Vienna art-wise, you can still poke your nose into the local galleries, museums and artists' studios until tomorrow. The Vienna Art Week is underway and, with the motto of “Inciting Passion”, is presenting over 100 top-class events. The festival centre, which has been set up in a derelict building with former workshops and business premises, is particularly wow this year. An experimental space has been created on 1,000 sqm (!), which will be filled with international visual art, performances, dance and music. Very cool!

Plants for everybody
No trend grows more luxuriantly and embellishes the interior as elegantly as ficus, yucca, monstera and pilea! The hipper the plant, the more expensive it is, though. The travelling nursery “Pflanzen für alle” (plants for everybody) provides a remedy. With huge plant sales at mini prices, it provides greenery fans with supplies for their home jungle – currently also in Vienna for 3 days. Plants are available from €2, €10 or €15! And pots to spice things up are also on offer. A visit on the last day is worthwhile – because there are extra discounts at the end! But you do have to register in advance.

Pattern Design on an iPad
Let's get creative! Which is always a great idea anyway and at the end of illustrator Sandra Hutter's workshop you can even use your creative output as a Christmas present for your loved ones. Equipped with an iPad and Apple Pencil, you'll learn how to create your own pattern designs in three sessions. Today starts with an introduction to the digital drawing app “Procreate”, the next sessions will then get down to business until the self-made designs can finally be printed on mobile phone covers, bed linen, shirts and more. Has the potential to be a gift favourite under the Christmas tree!

zweisterne
Who can still remember the daisy chains from their childhood? Unfortunately, these delicate creations only had a limited shelf life. Mother-daughter duo Daniela and Esther Stern found a way to capture summer for longer: They dry flowers and herbs, seal them in mini glass capsules and turn them into silver pendants for their label “zweisterne”. Now they are guests at (how could it be more fitting) Wald & Wiese with their winter-inspired plant jewellery. There you can shop for enchanting flowers and honey and truffle delicacies.

Rotlicht Festival 2023
You always want what you don't have. This is also true of photography. With Instagram, TikTok & co at their peak, analogue photography is all the cooler again. Which is just what the Rotlicht Festival celebrates with daily exhibition openings, workshops and photo walks all about classic photography throughout Vienna. The main exhibition with the works of the 20 Open Call winners can be admired at the Academy of Fine Arts. Today you can also attend a charcoal printing or chemigram workshop and shop for affordable art by local photographers!

We couldn't decide which flea market we like better, so here are two at once: you can stock up on useful and beautiful items for Christmas baking at Torterie Camille. Owner Camille has just become a mum and is therefore saying goodbye to cake plates, biscuit cutters, baking books and the like for now. And because home-baked goods need to be beautifully presented, the frei Yoga & Café has the right crockery for you at a bargain price. Plus clothing, plants, vinyl and some small items of furniture – all accompanied by relaxed sounds, snacks and drinks!

 Vegan Planet
Vegan Planet at the MAK
A vegan diet doesn't have to feel like renouncement. At Vegan Planet in the MAK this weekend, it’s all about life without animal products. Original alternatives to animal-based foods are on offer, as are vegan natural cosmetics, Christmas biscuits, fashion and environmentally friendly cleaning products. You can sample some of the products, watch cooking shows on stage (including with Hank Ge!) or attend workshops and yoga classes. Open House: Jewish Museum
A milestone birthday deserves to be celebrated properly and the Jewish Museum in Palais Eskeles is particularly good at this. For a whole day, they go all out with special tours, workshops and exciting insights to celebrate the 30th anniversary. For example, in 30-minute tours on 3 floors, 3 constantly changing objects are presented that tell the story of Viennese Jewish history. In 30 minutes, you can also learn to write your name in Hebrew and find out fascinating facts about exiled photographer Maria Austria during a “speed dating” session. All with free admission!

Vienna Roller Derby
Roller Derby urgently needs more fans! The action-packed, not exactly squeamish women's sport comes from the USA. It is played on roller skates, counter-clockwise and in circles. Points are scored by lapping the opposing team. In America it's been a big hit for a long time, but here it's still a real insider tip – and this weekend, the Austrian Championships will start! The opposing power for our Vienna Roller Derby Girls comes rolling in from Linz, Graz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg. Another reason to urgently become a fan: the intermission performance of the incomparable (male) Fearleaders!

Michael Buchinger
Goodbye, harmony – now it's time to hate! And in the most intensely funny way, because comedian Michael Buchinger uses his legendary “hate list” to rant live on the Stadtsaal stage about people who talk loudly in the cinema, aggressive organic food lovers who want to foist disgusting chickpea biscuits on you and those who pronounce gnocchi as “knotschi”. Peppered with anecdotes from Buchinger's wild life, it's definitely an evening to get annoyed and laugh along with, confirming once again what the inclined grumbler has long known: a little bit of hate is a must ;-)

Walk of Fame
Once they were well known, then they were displaced or murdered – and then forgotten. In a new exhibition, the Theatermuseum presents 14 Jewish theatre people who shaped Vienna between 1900 and 1938 – such as director Maria Gutmann, playwright Else Feldmann and composer Camilla Frydan. They are representative of a cosmopolitan Jewish (theatre) modernity that, from today's perspective, paints a fascinating picture of Vienna as a cosmopolitan city with a cross-border understanding of culture. For remembering and against forgetting!

Central American Film Festival
Those who still live off their Viennale memories can now march straight on to the next film festival. Films from Central America are rarely shown in cinemas here, anyway.  This year's festival is entirely focused on the political changes that are taking place in Guatemala. A number of documentary films are also dedicated to the country's dark past. Today, for example, “La Baláhna” is being shown, a profound short film about the universal power of love. By the way: today you can enjoy several films in a row with just one ticket!

Frauenzimmer
Contrary to the omnipresent self-optimisation mania, there are fortunately still places where more beautiful realisations apply – namely that we already are what we long for. Nancy Lee Akinci Seymann's embodiment course, which you can attend today in the Frauenzimmer, is also based on this realisation. With movement, dialogue, silence and respectful, healing touch, the aim is to bring your own place of power to life. The wisdom and beauty that each of us carries within us is nurtured until we feel like what we are: beautiful, relaxed, happy goddesses! :-)

Studio Comploj
This shop is not exactly located in the centre, but it's worth the trip! Glass guru Robert Comploj has opened his new studio in the 18th district. The wow-property combines 2 buildings (with a large glass front), in which workshop, gallery and shop come together. Inside – as already familiar from Westbahnstraße – no bling bling, but a clean interior that lets the glass eye-catchers stand on their own. From wafer-thin babushkas in candy colours to vases, everything here radiates crystal-clear beauty. Nice: you can peek into the workshop at any time and watch the maestro at work.

La Jolie
The city centre is once again flooded with tourists right now and the cafés are accordingly full. A good tip then – because it's a little tucked away – is the new La Jolie café, where you can always get a seat. The location used to be home to the vegan paradise Simply Raw Bakery. And there is still a lot of vegan food on the menu, but not exclusively. Breakfast is served all day long, from soul-warming porridge and croissants with coffee to sweet waffles with ice cream. Cakes, tarts and sandwiches are also on the programme. And all this in instagrammable, flowery surroundings.
