"Heya Girls!"
Normally, cucumbers are more of a midsummer thing. But this year their time to shine is in autumn when the “First Vienna Cucumber Week” is kicked off on September 9 at Yppenplatz. The motto sounds promising: “The crunchiest liaison in town: cucumbers meet glamour.” In any case, it's getting down to business, because the traditional company STAUD'S is joining forces with designer Alexandra Palla – and pushing the cucumber from the edge of the plate into the spotlight. For one week, you can sample STAUD'S countless pickle variations, purchase the limited edition Palla Vienna tea towel, get pickle recipes from Alexandra Palla's market kitchen, and marvel at her latest fashion collection. And for those who haven't heard it yet: Pickles are the new superfood. Pickle fountains are bubbling on Instagram, frozen pickles are being grated over cheese, and cocktails are being mixed with pickles. Now would you look at that, the pickle has suddenly become a culinary diva!

Wishing you a crunchy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Hidden Modernism
Industrialisation shaped European society around 1900. In response, there was a growing need for a life in harmony with nature and for spirituality – in Vienna as well. This led to a broad wave of reform efforts. The protagonists of this counter-movement were inspired by esotericism, theosophy, and occultism. Starting today, “Hidden Modernism” is dedicated to this little-noticed chapter in Austrian art history and features; showing, for example, drawings by Gertrude Honzatko-Mediz, which were created according to instructions from deceased persons. Telephone Game
Being a fly on the wall and eavesdropping  – was exciting even as a child, wasn't it? ;-) Now, in the Per Albin Hansson housing estate and the Kopenhagen Hof, adults can do this without feeling guilty: from today, telephone boxes ware set up here for 3 months. Pick up the receiver to hear short stories about everyday life and community living in Vienna's municipal housing estates. The stories are based on conversations that artist Laura Andreß had with residents beforehand. You can also use the telephone boxes to call from one „Gemeindebau” yard to another. Funny!

Diversity Ball 2025
A young man in a tailcoat elegantly twirls a woman in a flowing gown across the dance floor. She is blind, he is deaf. Two lesbian women are still debating who will lead this time, with celebrities and artists in the middle. The Diversity Ball aims to set an example: for diversity in our society and respect! It brings together people of different backgrounds and religions, with and without disabilities, women and men, heterosexual and homosexual, young and old! The celebration takes place in the stylish ambiance of Vienna City Hall with live music, a drag show, and a Primark and Humana fashion show.

Free open-air opera Vienna State Opera
Wow, this could be quite a celebration! This year is an important one for the Vienna State Opera, as it celebrates the 70th anniversary of its reopening after World War II. To mark the occasion, the musicians have come up with something very special: the new season will not open as usual in the opera house on the Ringstrasse, but with an open-air gala in the Burggarten! The event is intended to commemorate the reopening in 1955, when the premiere of “Fidelio” was performed. Opera greats such as Elina Garanca and our collective crush Jonas Kaufmann will be there!

Julius von Bismarck. Normal Catastrophe
He whips up the sea, captures lightning bolts and paints entire landscapes. In his works, Julius von Bismarck explores the relationship between us humans and what we call “nature”. His work is reflected in photographs, video works, sculptures and installations – KunstHausWien is showing a selection from the last 15 years as well as a new series of photographs. Julius has developed rotating LED lights for the green inner courtyard, which create the impression that individual trees are on fire. Of Cabbages And Kings
Laura Totenhagen, Veronika Morscher, and Fama M’Boup are actually solo singers – but they also harmonise wonderfully as a trio! This is evident in their joint performances, where they appear under the group name “Of Cabbages And Kings.” Their a cappella singing is warm and bright, yet also leaves room for darker, rougher facets – vocal artistry at its finest. If you want to check it out for yourself, you can do so live tonight! The trio will be performing their own compositions as well as settings of poems by Emily Dickinson, Ingeborg Bachmann, and others!

 Stadt der Frauen
The City of Women
What might an imaginary city in which women take the lead look like today? This question and similar ones were explored by means of artistic works created by participating migrant women as part of a Caritas CarBiz project in collaboration with Soho Studios. The result: an exhibition that aims to put the artists in the public spotlight. In particular, those women who are underrepresented in the public perception and who are often considered “uneducated.” Today will be the exhibition opening with a thematically appropriate reading and a communal feast!

Quirky art, quirky exhibition space – it's time for Parallel Vienna again! This year's place to be: the vacant Otto Wagner site in the 14th district. Works by well-known and soon-to-be-well-known artists ;-) are shown. Content
The employees of Smile Smile Inc. go about their wage work with humour and indifference. Meaning is irrelevant. They have to produce content in sheer quantities. Film clips that are as hollow as the ground beneath their feet in the former coal mining area. The first bird falls from the toxic sky, artificial intelligence proliferates in the basement, and a digital doppelganger takes over the accounts. Elias Hirschl's satirical view of the all-too-near future from his novel “Content” has been adapted for the stage by director Asli Kislal – magnificent!

Lord Huron
How sweet! Ben Schneider, Mark Barry, Miguel Briseno and Tom Renaud were already playing music together at the tender age of twelve. Years later, Schneider recruited his friends again and formed the band Lord Huron with them. You could say it was a complete success, because with their indie rock sound and especially their latest LP “Long Lost”, the boys got gigs on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and the Late Late Show. And they have also become an integral part of the biggest festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza. Today they are rocking the stage live at the Gasometer!

Dried flowers are always a bit of a mixed blessing – they often look pretty, but they make quite a mess... Fiona Armstrong agreed with this and founded the label “Bo Fritz”, for which she designs picturesque silk flowers. In her recently opened boutique in the first district, you are literally immersed in a sea of flowers: From ready-made bouquets and opulent arrangements to olive trees, something blooms at you from every corner of this minimalist, elegant store. As a florist, Fiona understands the architecture of flowers like no other and therefore has every flower and leaf made largely by hand by a Dutch manufacturer – and it shows!

 Sopherl
Sopherl am Naschmarkt
Sopherl used to be an institution. Where else in Vienna could you get a decent goulash in the middle of the night? Then things went downhill for the dimly lit cult pub, and in 2019 it was over. Now it has reopened – and apart from the name, it's all new. The décor is minimalist, the cuisine ambitious. Viennese fare (Gabelbissen!) is served with influences from around the world. Breakfast is available all day, and at lunchtime, a truly tasty menu is served with the regular menu. And in the evening, mountain prawns and venison medallions mean things might get a little more expensive. Beisl culture reinterpreted and quite successfully so!
