"Heya Girls!"
The combination is truly unusual. Indonesian artist Indah Arsyad combines contemporary issues with indigenous Hindu mythology from Java and Bali. Driven by her deep concern about climate change and environmental destruction, she translates ancient Javanese symbols, such as wayang figures, gamelan sounds and traditional chants, into a modern language, linking them with data and high-tech visualisations. In her new exhibition, “The Ultimate Breath”, at the Weltmuseum, she uses real-time scientific data on pollution in Indonesian rivers to control the light, sound and movement of her installation in Vienna. Arsyad does not depict disaster, but her fascinating dialogue between nature observation, technology and spirituality quickly illustrates the fragile balance between humans and nature. You can even meet Indah Arsyad in person – just drop by the museum and ask her questions.
Wishing you a mindful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Klimt Ceiling Paintings at Burgtheater
Wow, this is something you really shouldn't miss! The Burgtheater is being spruced up a bit during the 2025/2026 season, which means there is currently a large scaffolding structure inside. Doesn’t sound too appealing – but you’re allowed to climb up there! Once you reach the top, you can enjoy a close-up view of 10 beautiful ceiling frescoes by the then 24-year-old Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst, and their mutual friend Franz Matsch. A tour of the magnificent ceiling paintings above the grand staircase is available almost daily until June 2026. Tip: Wear non-slip shoes.
Burgtheater, Universitätsring 2, 1010 Vienna. Almost daily until June 2026. By appointment only. 25 €. Web

Blue Bird Festival
According to the Iroquois, the song of the bluebird keeps winter away and melts ice. The little blue bird wants to spread warmth again this year and will be landing live on stage at Porgy & Bess. Today we start with Jesca Hoop and her “Songs of Joni Mitchell.” Then it gets kinda Amy Winehouse-y with a dash of Adele when Zelda Weber takes to the stage. Jelle Denturck presents his first album since coming out as gay, “Dressed Like Boys,” and Rebecca Lynn Sprague, who actually studies painting, shows how beautiful melancholy sounds when paired with cheerfulness.
Porgy & Bess, Riemergasse 11, 1010 Vienna. 20-22 November 20:00. Day ticket from 56.50 €. Web

Fashion and art – that's how to get us! The Vienna art & fashion Gallery obviously knew this and has transformed its art gallery into a concept store for trendy second-hand fashion, design, and art during this autumn. The gallery business will remain open, of course, but you can also shop there now at the same time. Silk products such as dresses, nightgowns, and pillowcases are a particular highlight. But it's best to check it out for yourself, because there's currently an opening sale going on with 10% off everything! PS: They also take your favourite old items on commission.

Volksoper 1938
Operetta has always offered a brief escape into a dream world. But during rehearsals for Jara Benes' “Gruß und Kuss aus der Wachau” at the Volksoper in 1938, everything was turned upside down: The Nazis caused mass dismissals and persecution throughout the entire theatre – the dream was over. Now director Theu Boermans brings this cheery entertainment back to the Volksoper stage and contrasts it with the cold political reality of the Nazi era. Conductor Keren Kagarlitsky reconstructed the score from the limited surviving material, and today's ensemble plays the roles of their predecessors.

Live Podcast: Great Daughters
For many victims, domestic violence doesn't end with leaving the abusive relationship. The fight for safety, protection, and justice continues afterward – in court. Why does the justice system so often fail to effectively protect victims? In the live edition of her podcast “Große Töchter” (great daughters) cultural studies scholar Beatrice Frasl will speak with victim and family rights lawyer Sonja Aziz about the loopholes in the legal system, perpetrator strategies, and what needs to change so that survivors of violence will finally be protected instead of remaining at risk.

Søstrene Grene
Just in time for the cosy season, a touch of Danish hygge has arrived on Mariahilfer Straße! A brand-new 416 square-metre Søstrene Grene store has opened there, making it the largest in Austria! You can look forward to familiar Scandinavian delights here, including decorations, small furniture, craft supplies, toys, kitchenware and stationery. The interior is inspired by a cityscape: the wide aisles are intended to evoke boulevards, the tall shelves reference modern skyscrapers and the lower ones suggest charming townhouses. However, the highlight is undoubtedly the mirrored spiral staircase at the heart of the store. Happy shopping!

Bistro Fantasy
I've had what was probably the most delicious French toast of my life. Wonderfully caramelised and served with “smashed” plums. Divine. I didn't expect that at all from this place. Bistro Fantasy is a large, sparsely furnished restaurant brimming with concrete and metal, which has been inundated with guests since it opened. So it doesn't just look “brutalist”, it's also quite loud. If that doesn't bother you, you'll be rewarded with really good food. Breakfast is served until late afternoon (from shakshuka to granola to chive bread), in the evening, you can enjoy surprisingly composed cocktails with dishes like yakitori or sandwich with burnt Cajun salmon trout.
