"Heya Girls!"
I remember the moment I hung up my first Josef Frank curtains – suddenly, the room was no longer just a living room, but a little heaven of optimism with leafy vines and an explosion of colour. As you can see, I'm a Frank fan! And for fans of the architect and designer, Vienna will soon offer something sensational: on 8 March, an entire house designed by Frank will open its doors! The legendary Villa Beer in Hietzing was built in 1929/30 for Julius and Margarete Beer – a total work of art of the Second Viennese Modernism, elegant, practical and full of light. After years of restoration work, this architectural manifesto will be open to the public from March onwards. Rather than being a museum, it will be an open house with guided tours, talks and concerts. There will even be guest rooms in the attic that you can rent for a night! (You know where to find me in future.) Admission to the Open House on 8 March is free, but advance registration is required. You can reserve your time slot from this Sunday onwards.

Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Benamor
It's hard to believe, but gender issues were already a hot topic in the 1920s! This is proven by the rediscovery of the funny operetta Benamor from 1923. The storyline: Sultan Dario wants to finally marry off his sister Benamor. What no one suspects: Dario is actually a woman, and Princess Benamor is a man. When princes from near and far arrive, eager to marry, the gender swap is in danger of being exposed! Especially when Benamor has no intention of conforming to the expectations of a princess and the Sultan develops a little too much interest in one of the suitors...

10 Years of Urban Sketchers in Vienna
Drawing the place where you live based on direct observation has become a global trend known as “urban sketching”. It's all about immediate artistic reproduction and participating in a creative community. Everyone from professionals to amateurs is welcome to join in. Here in Vienna, too! The local branch was founded by Gerlinde Schweiger, Sandra Biskup and Ida Kronika, who have been meeting regularly in public spaces for 10 years now to capture special corners of the city. You can currently admire some of their cool artworks featuring Vienna at Kunst Volkshochschule!

Dealing in Splendour
The 400-year-old art collection of the Liechtenstein princely dynasty is one of the most impressive ever assembled. Appropriately, the current special exhibition at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace is dedicated to the fascinating history of the European art market. It reveals that auctions were already known in the Roman Empire. Art fairs were already commonplace in 16th-century Antwerp, and the first catalogues of works by Old Masters were compiled as early as the 18th century. Loans and princely collection pieces create a historical visual experience!

Lukas Oscar
Powerful, melancholic, emotional – does a 23-year-old need anything more to melt hearts with his voice? Obviously not, when you take Lukas Oscar. The Austrian singer-songwriter with Filipino roots already wrote songs for other artists when he was just a teenager and gained international attention as co-author of the Eurovision Song Contest entry “Tears Getting Sober”. Now his debut album has been released, featuring songs about self-doubt, pressure to perform and existential questions. Very relatable topics, and you can see him live today!

Disco Schabernack x Hoxton Vienna
Pyjama parties have always been super cool. As a kid, though, they were always a bit too supervised – which is definitely not the case today! At the Hoxton Hotel, the Schabernack trio takes the mattress party to the next level: 8 DJs, several bars with natural wines and cocktail creations, and tasty treats from Bouvier, Salzamt, or even torte 0.0 await you in multiple rooms. And of course – because it wouldn't be a proper pyjama party without them – there's a SingStar room, tarot readings, and a beauty area. So, quickly slip into your feather-trimmed pyjamas and drift off to dreamland!

Angelika Hager: Polly Adler
A dazzling crime novel performance starring Stefanie Reinsperger and Sebastian Wendelin. The Burgtheater's stars rock the first Polly Adler mystery: “Pardon, but there's a corpse swimming in the chocolate.” Polly's creator, Angelika Hager, sends callboys, anti-capitalist anarchists, hysterical ball-going mothers, sex-addicted chancellors, and her disaster-prone columnist protagonist hurtling through Vienna's high society and into a vat of chocolate. Sona MacDonald sweetens the madness with songs that leave no one unmoved – perfect appetizer for the Vienna Opera Ball!

Ballet for Life
On July 12, 1986, Queen gave one of the most legendary rock concerts of all time at London's Wembley Stadium. Forty years later, Freddie Mercury's powerful voice can now be heard in Vienna, but in a ballet. Members of the world-renowned Béjart Ballet Lausanne perform Maurice Béjart's visionary choreography to live recordings from the Wembley concert and the immortal compositions by Mozart. A wonderful reflection on impermanence and immortality through art. Another highlight: the spectacular costumes made by star designer Gianni Versace!

Milonga Monday
If Saturday Night Fever didn't quite do it for you this weekend – no problem, Milonga Monday is just as cool! Because then you can try out your fiery tango moves at the Rote Bar. It starts with an optional introductory dance lesson to get you all set up, and then it’s off to the milonga, when all sorts of tango variations will be heating up the dance floor. Once everyone's mastered the “caminar”, “giro”, and “abrazo”, the duo Tanzbar, with Jesper Dyremose on accordion and Benjamin Müller on cross flute, will provide live music. Pretty nice way to start the week, isn’t it?

Memories read
For many younger people, “Holocaust” and “Shoah” are becoming increasingly abstract concepts. Few eyewitnesses are still alive, yet many accounts, stories, and experiences have been passed down. These texts deserve to be heard, read, and reflected upon. Therefore, the Project Space in the atrium of the Jewish Museum is currently being transformed into an open reading stage. On selected dates, excerpts from the memoirs of Holocaust survivors will be read aloud by well-known actors. Today's readers include Scharmien Zandi and Markus Meyer.

We know that you can set a rhythm by snapping your fingers. But by swinging brooms? Or by clattering rubbish bins? We’ve only known that since Stomp! Hopefully, the weather will soon turn more spring-like, and then it will be time to get the bikes out of the basement again. Oscar's
Hard to find, but worth the effort! The new “Oscar's” at Design Hotel Wilde is Vienna's laid-back answer to the classic hotel café. Within the heritage-protected walls of the former main post office, apricot jam meets modern design – and a kimcheese toastie meets a glass of Grüner Veltliner. Early morning, late at night, or in between: here you can work, date, read, chat, and eat as if you were already a regular there. The decor is delightfully colourful yet elegant, and the walls have been painted by an artist. And because it's so tucked away, it's a wonderfully quiet insider tip in the middle of the first district.
