"Heya Girls!"
When a can of expired tuna and a fake Louis Vuitton bag strike up a friendship in a Los Angeles karaoke bar, you know that the Tricky Women Festival has arrived in Vienna. Cartoon animation often seems to be aimed at children, but at the Vienna Animation Film Festival, it's a completely different story. For 25 years (congratulations on the anniversary!), the festival has been showcasing what happens when women take over the genre: drawn, kneaded and collaged characters tell stories that are often funny, sometimes weird and always clever. While bodies melt away in a bathtub or a hidden crime nears its discovery, a stone wants to explore the meaning of life. This year, 141 films from all over the world will be shown – ranging from surreal humour to political commentary. There will also be discussions with artists, workshops, exhibitions and parties. And after watching a few films, you'll realise that animation is sometimes the smartest way to explain the world.
Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Under Water
Seventy percent of the Earth is covered by water, yet the oceans are less explored than the surface of the moon. Photography has attempted to make this hidden world visible from its inception. The exhibition “Under Water” shows 120 works that focus both below the water's surface and at sea level. Included are for instance interwar photographs by Hans Hass, aesthetic works by David Uzochukwu, who has worked with Pharrell Williams and FKA twigs, and images of female free divers on the Japanese Pacific coast. The opening vernissage of the exhibition is today!

Kendall Lujan
Somewhere between glitter, lace, puffed sleeves and little crowns, Kendall Lujan feels as fit as a fiddle. What first began in Portland with a distinctive voice and a keen sense of emotion has recently been developing into one of the most exciting new voices on the American singer/songwriter scene. Like no other, Kendall combines touching songwriting with an unmistakable aesthetic and a powerful performance that is as personal as it is dazzling. But it’s probably best to check her music out for yourself – today, the songbird will be performing live at Sargfabrik!

Homage to Our Mothermothers
Instead of being told, stories are being sewn today! In artist Iklim Dogan's workshop, participants will gather around a hand-dyed textile to write, read, share and embroider the stories of the women in their families. Accompanied by a number of reading and writing rituals, they learn drawing and embroidery techniques to weave stories together in a landscape of memories and grief. What makes this workshop special is that a collaborative artwork is created, and the works of participants in the previous workshop may also be continued. Quite a unique event!

The VBKÖ was founded in Vienna in 1910, making it one of the oldest women artists' associations in Europe! It documents more than a century of artistic practice and the evolution of feminist artwork created by women. Following extensive renovations to better preserve historical materials, the archive opens its doors today with a celebration of exhibitions and performances. Visitors will gain insights into the association's holdings and history, and seven VBKÖ artists will present their projects. A guided tour of the archive is also available!

Cat Spring Reading
Meow! We are so excited! Here at CitySpotterGirl’s, we're actually huge cat lovers – and especially fond of our two office cats, Oscar and Emil. That's why we find this event particularly lovely: The Erste Wiener Lesetheater will be hosting a reading night tonight for all cuddly and sweet-toothed felines (tomcats are welcome too, of course ;-), featuring texts, poems, songs, and musical performances about our favourite pets. The evening is divided into two time slots with different performers, so there's plenty to listen to. Purr!

“Green, green, green are all my clothes...” What does it mean when lots of shamrocks are dancing through the city today? The Irish are celebrating their national holiday! Today is the big St. Patrick's Day parade, starting at the Schottenstift and ending in front of the Burgtheater, which, with a bit of luck, will already be illuminated in green. The Vienna Pipes and Drums, a Scottish bagpipe band, will provide the music, all the Irish pubs from Flanagan's to Charlie P's will be packed, and the DDSG is offering a St. Patrick's Day cruise on the Danube. Don't forget your funny hat!

Remembering at Semmering
Did you know? Jewish Vienna once played an important role in the spa region on the “Magic Mountain”! In her book "Regulars – Jews at Semmering", Danielle Spera describes this from many perspectives and has spoken to numerous contemporary witnesses for it. Richard Weihs contributed two chapters on the Nazi era and has now published his second book on the widespread theft of Jewish property in the Semmering area. Both authors will give a reading today and talk about the culture of remembrance and repression at Semmering. An important topic!

P. Autengruber: Döbling street names
Street names are an indispensable aid to orientation in a big city. But they are also part of public memory. In Döbling, too, events, fates and personalities have been engraved in the public memory through the naming of traffic areas. Historian Peter Autengruber has researched them and recorded fascinating information in his “Encyclopaedia of Viennese Street Names” (published by CitySpotterGirl’s publishing company). Today, he will read some extracts at the Döbling district museum. Even long-time Viennese residents might learn something new ;-)

At Home with Arnold Schönberg
Right in the heart of Schwarzenbergplatz awaits a piece of music history: The Arnold Schönberg Center preserves the legacy of the composer whose twelve-tone music redefined the 20th century. The exhibition “At Home with Arnold Schönberg” traces his eventful life between Vienna, Berlin, and exile in Los Angeles. Letters, photographs, and manuscripts reveal Schoenberg not only as a composer, but also as a teacher, painter, and passionate inventor. At the end, visitors even encounter one of his more unusual ideas: a self-invented multi-player chess game.

Francis Designquartier
A lot has changed at Julius-Tandler-Platz recently. The square in front of Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, which people preferred to avoid, has been transformed into the rather trendy Francis business district. In addition to offices, a brand-new concept store has opened, spanning a whopping 250 square meters! There you'll find jewelry, fashion and accessories, stationery, ceramics, natural cosmetics, culinary delights, and textiles. Labels like Busenfreundin, Anna Aniq, and Poldi are represented – all local Austrian brands. A hot tip for gift shopping – something the 9th district definitely needed!

Boca
Between the hustle of Westbahnhof and Mariahilfer Straße, a restaurant has opened that you wouldn't expect to find there. Boca, located in the new Hotel The Companion, focuses on Mediterranean market cuisine with a big-city polish. On the plates: lots of vegetables, fish, herbs, spices, all vibrant and aromatic. At the stove: New Zealander Lauryn Therin, trained by Ottolenghi – and it's this international flair that’s evident in the menu. Added to this is the restaurant's striking interior with polished marble, warm wood and open structures. A space both cool and beautiful. A must-see!
