"Heya Girls!"
Fashion-wise, 2005 was a low point: It was the year Helmut Lang finally retired from the fashion world.  I still have a few blouses designed by this Viennese fashion genius hanging in my wardrobe to this day. From 9 December, Lang will be returning to Vienna in a unique way, not with a retrospective of his sophisticated, minimalist designs, but with an exhibition revealing the creative process behind his ideas. The exhibition “Séance de travail” at the MAK reveals what made Lang's fashion so unique and groundbreaking. Early designs, videos and reconstructed shop architecture give visitors a sense of how someone who likes to push boundaries yet remains quiet thinks. You wander through the material of a fashion designer that otherwise remains hidden: prototypes, photographs, text fragments, experiments. Much of it seems surprisingly familiar, as if you were rediscovering traces from the 1990s and 2000s. And perhaps you will also rediscover a piece of Vienna that you had long forgotten.

Wishing you a splendid week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Kaiserpanorama
What is almost forgotten today was a real mass medium around 1900: the Kaiserpanorama. 70 years ago, Vienna's last branch closed, bringing an end to a now forgotten era of optical travel around the globe in colour and 3D. Up to 25 people at a time could view weekly changing series of images on the round viewing boxes and dream themselves away to foreign worlds. Arthur Schnitzler was also enthusiastic and visited the panorama more than 200 times! From today, you can view the Kaiserpanorama in real life at the Metro Kinokulturhaus for a limited time!

What grows between us
Feminism and ecology may not seem to go together at first glance, but on an artistic and scientific level, they could well be more closely intertwined than you think – at least that is the theme of the Soho Studios' annual exhibition. The starting point is the question of how new forms of sharing knowledge, coexistence, care, and countermeasures can be developed in the midst of the climate crisis. To this end, several artists use collages, film, sculptures and even fermentation processes to bring various feminist and ecological visions to life. Today is the opening!

Imperial Ball
An opulent ball evening in honour of Johann Strauss: In his latest piece, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui transforms Johann Strauss' music into a spectacular stage experience. Cherkaoui mixes waltzes with tango, voguing and even mixes in some influences from martial arts – old Mr Strauss would be quite amazed ;-) The stage set meanders between splendour and decay, Strauss' music merges with live percussion and singing from Japan. The result is a dialogue between the past and the present; an evening where tradition, glamour and contemporary physicality come together.

Henry Rox: Banana Circus.
A celery stalk as a model's shapely back and a cauliflower as a voluminous petticoat – in Henry Rox's hands, fruits and vegetables definitely don't transform into still lifes! As a sculptor, he began creating whimsical scenes from food, which initially found success in children's books. After moving to London, he started making his figures from modelling clay and bringing them to life with a camera – and suddenly his “vegetable orchestra” found itself in a Hollywood film! Cucumber, tomato & Co. are currently on display at the Bonartes Photo Institute.

Angel Advent
These days, with one design advent market after another, it's hard to keep track of them all. Nevertheless, it's still possible to find hidden gems – like Ruth Wegerer's angel workshop. The journalist creates poetic creatures from fabric and wire that are simply a must-see. Once a year, she sells these angels, which are legendary among connoisseurs, at her private angel market. Chandelier crystals, silk flowers, feathers, bark and antique lace are used to create the figurines (which are up to 100 cm tall). And there will also be a free buffet offering some heavenly treats!

Imperial Christmas Grouches
The festive season raises the same questions every year: Where do Stollen and biscuits come from, where was Vienna's first Christmas Market, and how did Empress Sisi and her husband celebrate Christmas? You can find out this and more about Christmas in our beautiful city on today's Advent Walk. For example, the secret of which Habsburgs were real Christmas grouches is revealed. As well as the reason for Joseph II's aversion to the nativity scene. And then, of course, the question of all questions: who brings the presents, Christkind or Father Christmas? It will be enlightening!

 Breakfast at Tiffany's
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Melancholic, but so glamorous! The Film Archive is currently celebrating a retrospective of film icon Audrey Hepburn with the title “Simply Audrey”. Today you can see her masterpiece “Breakfast at Tiffany's”, in which she floats through early 1960s New York as Holly Golightly, between parties, champagne and shop windows full of diamonds – elegant, elusive and always a little too light for this world. Behind the iconic black dress, pearl necklace and croissant in front of Tiffany's lies a quiet portrait of identity, longing and self-protection. Beautiful enough to make you dream!

Punch the Cold at Cayo Coco
When it's freezing outside, things heat up on the rooftop! Especially at the Hoxton Hotel. During Advent season, every Wednesday at the hotel's own rooftop bar, Cayo Coco, it's time for “Punch the Cold” – not a Christmas market, not an after-work event, but something in between and just right: warm, spicy, relaxed. Ever inspired by Cuban flair, the menu features a selection of tropical punches. These are served with Cuban roast pork, yuca crackers with mojo dip and coconut balls. So if you've always dreamed of Christmas in the Caribbean – here you go!

Bistro Flameau
It was a daring experiment, but it worked! A smoky corner bar that served schnapps already in the early hours was transformed into a bright and cheerful bistro. The mid-century style has been retained, but everything else is new, renovated and freshly upholstered. Most importantly, behind the bar is a dedicated duo who pair natural wines with small, clever nibbles. Breakfast is served from the morning till late at night, together with a few dishes that fall into the category of “modern Heuriger food.” Examples are grilled cheese sandwiches made with very dark black bread from the Grimm bakery and a delicious courgette carpaccio with radishes. That's how good uncomplicated cuisine can be!
