"Heya Girls!"
It's hardly really surprising, but did you know that only 17% of biographical entries on German Wikipedia (one of the most visited German websites, after all) are about women? That's not because there aren't any interesting women, though – it's simply because almost all of the entries are written by men! So, if you want to change that, come to my creative centre Ottilie in the Waldviertel on October 18th and 19th. This weekend, historian and CitySpotterGirl’s daughter Lilly Maier will first present her current research on courageous women who saved masses of Jews during World War II – and were later forgotten by male-dominated historiography. Then, in this history workshop, participants will get active themselves and contribute to women's history by writing Wikipedia articles. No prior knowledge is necessary, because with the right tips from Lilly Maier and the combined women's power, it's not that difficult! More information and registration here!
Have a powerful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Gothic Modern
Dark, sometimes macabre, yet still deeply emotional: In its major autumn exhibition, the Albertina stages a highly charged encounter between modernism and Gothic art. The works demonstrate how artists such as Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Käthe Kollwitz, and Otto Dix found inspiration for a radical renewal in medieval art between 1875 and 1925. Creations ranging from Symbolism to Expressionism are placed in direct confrontation with iconic paintings and sculptures by Old Masters – themes such as love and sexuality, death and grief, or faith and doubt impressively link the eras!
Albertina, Albertinaplatz 1, 1010 Vienna. Vernissage 18 September, from 18:30. Free entry. Web

Think! Store by Vega Nova
Why do healthy shoes always have to be ugly? Martin Koller actually asked himself the same question about 30 years ago and gave us the shoe brand Think! as a gift. Incidentally, the brand has now opened a brand-new shared store on Josefstädterstraße, where you can provide yourself with these aesthetically pleasing healthy shoes. You will find a wide range of different models there that not only still look stylish, but also promote proper walking movement and support circulation and posture. A win-win for both health and style!

Flea Market in the Archbishop's Palace
Only a few times a year does the Archbishop's Palace offer a glimpse behind its thick walls. On Friday and Saturday, the doors open for the large antiques and book market, as carla Nord has emptied its treasure chests: Plenty of books of all genres (novels, cookbooks, antiquarian books), rarities, and curiosities can be snagged at bargain prices. In addition to reading material, there's also fine glassware, beautiful porcelain, small pieces of furniture, and antique lamps to discover. A huge selection – and you won't get another chance to visit the venerable palace anytime soon!

Brotfabrik Autumn Festival
A courtyard filled with music, artistic interventions, a design market, and a book fair – the programme for the Brotfabrik's autumn festival is once again quite impressive! Some guided tours will provide an overview of the many exhibitions that are open on this day, and they offer brewery tours with beer tastings and concerts as well. A particularly nice feature: As part of an experimental performance format, six dancers will engage in a physical dialogue with the Brotfabrik's unique architecture and show how movements make spaces visible. Impressive!

Meet the Makers – Fashion and Style
The Siebensternviertel is famously cool, with its charming boutiques and artistic vibe. But who is actually behind the great atmosphere? The neighbourhood introduces its merchants with the “Meet the Makers” event series, so today you can stroll through the alleys, visit fashion pop-ups, and snatch some bargains at the many shop promotions. The main attraction, however, arethe two fashion shows: The designers will present their creations on a 20-metre catwalk! Those taking part include Igor Zeus, Sylvie T., Vis à Vis and wienerkleid. Really nice!

20 Years of Strandbar Herrmann
Yes, autumn is slowly but surely making its way to the city. The days are getting shorter, the evenings cooler – and the beach bars are ringing in the end of their season. This includes Strandbar Herrmann. But to keep the autumn melancholy from taking over completely, there's another big deck chair sale for a mere 10 € each! And because the beach bar has turned 20 this year, lots of other treasures have accumulated. The proceeds will go to the Vienna Cancer Aid organization. Oh, and the drinks supplies have to go too, so there will be a drink-up party with a DJ starting at 16:00. ;-)

Sound of Music
Today, a healthy dose of nostalgia will be flickering across the screen! To mark its 60th anniversary, the Gartenbaukino cinema is screening the classic musical “The Sound of Music”. Cheerful and charming, it tells the story of the singing Trapp family and the tragic romance between the governess Maria and the widowed Captain Trapp. And it continues to shape the image of Austria, especially among Americans, to this day. In addition to plenty of Alpine kitsch and emotion, you can look forward to classic songs such as “Favorite Things” and “Edelweiss.” Cult!

Breast cancer diagnosis: What now?
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women. Fortunately, thanks to increasingly effective early detection, interdisciplinary breast health centres and modern treatment options, the disease is highly treatable today. Today, Dr Michael Bolliger will explain which state-of-the-art therapies are available in Austria and, above all, how breast cancer can be defeated in a gentler way. The focus will be on breast centres that offer patients the best possible comprehensive care in a “one-stop shop”, including a psycho-oncologist and a breast care nurse.

Katie La Folle
They need valerian tea for more Zen, Lady Grey for feminism and Jagertee for adventure – and they are definitely not suitable for machine washing! The fragile teacups of modern times, which attract even more fragile, even more sensitive “Tasserl”. Can they still be saved? That's exactly what Katie La Folle is trying to find out as she counts the mugs in her cupboard and any sense of self-determination seems to dry up in the tea strainer. Let's dance through the child-free Urban Garden and enjoy a leisurely cup of tea alone in the loo... if we're lucky!

Herr Klotz
Colourful, flashy and incredibly cool – that's Herr Klotz. The shop in the 15th district, painted in lots of pink and black and white zigzags, may not be very centrally located, but it's definitely worth a visit. In addition to vintage items, 25 designers also have a permanent platform for their creations here. Stylish upcycled fashion has its place on the clothes rails, as well. Sustainability plays an important role at Herr Klotz in general, which is why the shop has also set up a nice alteration service shop. Meaning you can bring your favourite pieces for minor repairs or take part in workshops here. Cool concept!

Figoletta
Vienna is the world capital of breading – and Figlmüller is the emperor of Wiener schnitzel. But what happens when the Figlmüller people decide to open an Italian restaurant? Then – no joke – even the pizza is prepared in real schnitzel breadcrumbs. The amazing thing is that it actually tastes really good! Of course, the new Figoletta also offers classic Italian cuisine and “normal” pizza. But if you want something special, order the 3 small “Figolinos” topped with vitello tonnato, prosciutto and marinara. The restaurant is still a pop-up, but even before the final renovation, it already looks brightly coloured and fun.
