"Heya Girls!"
Her first concert in Vienna was met with standing ovations and encore after encore. Now Fabia Rebordao is coming back for the second time. The Portuguese singer is not only one of her country's best-known artists, she is also the queen of Fado Novo – and the embodiment of a whole new generation of Fado singers. And not just because she has performed on the stage of the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York. Fado (Portuguese for “fate”) is traditionally sad and melancholy music, usually about unhappy love and world-weariness. But Rebordao mixes it with soul, jazz, blues and bossa nova and suddenly fado sounds modern. Rumour has it that her next project will be a collaboration with Madonna, but before that she will make a stop at the impressive Ehrbar Saal. And by the way: with the Lisbon-born singer, the encores often last just as long as the concert itself.

Wishing you a vivacious week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

It's still a little while until the next Fashion Week, but you don't have to miss out on some interesting catwalk flair. Today, the models of the Hetzendorf Fashion School's end-of-year show are parading through the park. Not only the collections of the graduating class are on show, but the students of the various disciplines will also present their fabric-turned tailoring dreams. Sewn and knitted items as well as fashion modelling will be presented. All with the motto “Elements”. And since there are so many visitors, there will be two shows.

Achievement
Don't be alarmed when you happen to drive past it: The golden dome of the Secession will be wearing black from today. And that has to do with lots and lots of tights! As a tribute to the strength, power and beauty of black women, Havana-born artist Susan Pilar Delahante Matienzo is wrapping the Secession's laurel dome in 1,200 black Palmers stockings. Each of the 2,500 sheets will be covered – the inspiration for the unusual dome project is the typical braided hairstyle of African-Cuban women. A strong statement and part of Matienzo's Achievement exhibition.

 Am Himmel
Summer Solstice Bonfire Am Himmel
Hello, summer! Yesterday marked the start of our favourite time of year. A natural spectacle that is not only an occasion for a big celebration in Sweden, we also enjoy the mystical tradition here – for example with a glowing solstice fire! Two fire bowls will be lit today on the meadow Am Himmel, between the Tree of Life Circle and the Oktogon Restaurant. Renewal, fertility and growth are symbolised by the flames – life itself is celebrated. A fantastic view over the city and barbecue specialities plus cool drinks: This will be a magical summer evening.

Urban Gardening Matinée
Open bookcases have become an integral part of the urban landscape. In the Alois Drasche Park, the concept has been extended – with an open plant case created by designer Florent Souly! The concept: You take a plant from the shelf and put another in its place. The “Festival of Tranquillity” also takes place around this blossoming sharing-project. On the programme today: green reading with books on urban gardening and garden cooking. You also have an opportunity to plant certified organic seeds free of charge and to swap or take them home!

 Betty O
Betty O
Anyone who doesn't fit into a box either has too big a mouth or too big an instrument. Betty O has both! On her red piano, the singer rhymes her way through life's parables and never runs out of cabaret facets. Born in the wine country, the vivacious singer sings about her maturing process in her delicious songs. And despite her southern Styrian origins, it's not always grape juice that runs through her veins... Today she celebrates her Vienna premiere at CasaNova and, fittingly, has winemaker Stefan Potzinger accompanying her. Could be fun!

 Rohtko
Rothko
It was one of the biggest scandals in the art world: in 2004, a couple bought a painting by expressionist Mark Rothko for 8.3 million dollars, only to discover years later that it turned out to be a copy by a Chinese immigrant. In a crazy fusion of live cinema, stage, digital space and film sets – from a Chinese restaurant to a white cube gallery – Polish director Lukasz Twarkowski and a twelve-person ensemble explore the relationship between original and copy, the real and the virtual, between liveliness and representation. A must see! Why? Here is a foretaste.

Airbag-Shopper by Freitag
Yes, sometimes you can get enthusiastic about absolutely empty and inflated themes ;-) Take the new shoppers from upcycling label Freitag, for example. For once, the latest members of the bag family are not made from tarpaulins, but from dismantled airbags. The light and airy, robust lifesavers were on duty in road traffic, but they were fortunately spared any accidents. Now they are making a comeback as the F700 Arrow and F708 Firebird, combined with colourful handles made from disused tension belts. Super cool!

Michael Niavarani: Venus & Jupiter
This season, the Theater Im Park receives high-ranking visitors, as the gods themselves descend upon us to shake things up. At the centre of cabaret icon Michael Niavarani's production is the core family of the gods consisting of father Jupiter, aunt Venus and son Apollo. In order to reconcile with their son, Jupiter and Venus travel to Vindobona, where celestial shenanigans involving love, deceit, transformation and jealousy are set in motion. There is only one thing left to do: pray that the gods themselves never cross your path, for they are only human, too!

Stop Femi(ni)cide
A lack of political measures to prevent violence, racist narratives and patriarchal violence as an “imported problem” – social misbehaviour that has made Austria synonymous with the “land of femicides”. The theatre collective Hybrid is calling for action against systemic murders and today, on the annual day of remembrance for the victims of femicide, is assembling a 90-strong (!) choir. Their chanting is based on a text by activist Mahsa Ghafari, which addresses the abuses in the protection of victims and institutional failures. Powerful!

Rumbia
A mixture of the sounds and mysteries of the jungle, the Andean highlands as well as the Peruvian chicha music – that's cumbia! It’s the most widespread musical genre in Latin America and originated in Colombia, but quickly spread throughout the entire region, taking on a special characteristic in each country. Rumbia, a band with musicians from Peru, Chile, Venezuela and Austria, shares the rich tradition of Peruvian cumbia. For four days, the Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz will be closed to traffic and become the lively centre of the Angewandte Festival. They are intended to draw attention to the inter- and transdisciplinary of the applied arts. Plus: guided tours of the art university and exhibitions of the 2024 graduation projects. Anyone wishing to dive into the deep blue in the current tropical temperatures only needs to pop into Andreas Franke's Oceanstore. The underwater photographer brings the sound of the sea right into the middle of the seventh district with his beach house-like shop. There, he collects everything you can scoop-net on the beach and in the ocean: lobster-studded bath towels, cute trays with aquanaut motifs, postcards and notebooks with underwater giants, but also all sorts of things to soothe your grumpy stomach after a hot day at the beach, such as Portuguese sardines, olive oil or pirate herb liqueur. We definitely want to sea more of that!

Elstar
London design studio Goddard Littlefair redesigned the long-closed Imperial Riding School Hotel for Marriott – looks pretty good, with its elegance and modern interpretation of Art Deco. There is, of course, a restaurant: with business lunches and dinners. Orders are taken almost only in English (service staff are probably only found abroad) and the Hungarian-leaning menu offers modern Austro-Hungarian cuisine. Tastes good. And the former orchard of Emperor Franz Joseph I, hidden behind the original façade of the former Imperial Military Riding School, is perfect for barbecue and drinks with its garden terrace and bar.
