"Heya Girls!"
Well, this is going to be an eerie Friday! But that's okay, it's Halloween/All Saints' Day, after all! And where better to celebrate this morbid game with death than in Vienna, where even the Central Cemetery has charm? Exactly. The Leopoldmuseum, for example, offers a special tour showing how fascination with death was expressed in art around 1900. Artists like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele frequently depicted death in their work. Those who prefer to immerse themselves in the action can experience a fairytale-like horror spectacle at First Escape's Halloween special: in a gloomy forest, Rumpelstiltskin welcomes his guests with drinks such as “Kiss of the Witch,” while Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and co. wait for their rescuers. At the Central Cemetery, there's a spooky party with trial lying in coffins. And at the Gartenbaukino, Radu Jude's new, quirky vampire epic “Dracula” is celebrating its preview – including a costume contest. Typical Vienna: goosebumps with tongue-in-cheek humour ;-)
Wishing you a fun week,
Your CitySpotterGirl
P.S. Exciting events await you in the coming weeks CitySpotterGirl’s creative centre, Ottilie!

Kokoroko
Kokoroko's songs are simply beautiful to listen to. The band, which now has eight members, was founded in 2014 with the goal of bringing more diversity to the British Afrobeat scene. Their breakthrough finally came in 2018 with “abusey junction.” Today, Kokoroko thrills audiences worldwide with its mix of Afro-house, Amapiano, Detroit house, future bounce, and techno. Their album “tuff times never last” was released in July of this year, and you can dance to its songs live at Flex today. If you can't wait, you can practise your moves with this in the meantime. ;-)

Lisette Model
The poverty of the Lower East Side as a direct contrast to the upper class, and in between, the nightlife in bars and jazz clubs – Lisette Model was able to capture these moods like no other. A Jewish Viennese, she emigrated to New York in 1938 and became one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. The Albertina is currently showing a comprehensive retrospective with iconic photos such as “Cafe Metropole” as well as lesser-known works. The original draft of her monograph – a classic in the history of photo books – is also on display for the first time!

Citrus Tasting at Casa Caria
Sometimes, sucking lemons can actually taste fantastic. At least when it comes to the extraordinary citrus rarities at Casa Caria. If you aren’t familiar with them yet (or if you are simply as big a fangirl as we are ;-), you should totter over to Lindengasse today and try them for yourself. Yuzu, bergamot, and Tahitian limes, served raw and processed, add a touch of zest. There are also some exciting surprise fruits that will be making an appearance. It all tastes like a trip to sun-kissed Italy – and isn’t that just a perfect remedy for beating the autumn blues!

Märchen ohne Ende
Truth has swallowed the poisoned apple, now lies in a glass coffin, waiting to be kissed awake. But the prince of reason can't find his horse right now. Little Red Riding Hood has crashed in the forest with the big bad wolf over three bottles of wine and forgotten about her grandmother, at least according to the fairest one of all. Fairytales without ending? The “happy ending” is slipping through our fingers, but as Emperor Joseph II decreed: “Everything must end well.” So off we go to the Simpl, where Niavarani's latest coup serves up a fairy tale of a happy ending ;-)

Addicted to Vintage Flea Market
Yay, this weekend it's going to be getting nostalgic again at the Kunsttankstelle, because the city's most beautiful vintage flea market will be opening its doors! Over the summer, the sorting fairies from Addicted to Vintage lived in the attic, polishing and sorting spiders, forming piles, and gathering the most beautiful treasures from the 1950s to the 90s. You will find some small furniture, fashion, records, lamps, decor, various curiosities, and other fun things to buy. Between browsing and reminiscing, you'll be able to sip liqueur in style and devour creamy treats.

Crown Jewels of the Imperial Treasury
We don't know where the ones from the Louvre are being sold off, but at least we still have our own crown jewels ;-) They're impressively presented in the Imperial Treasury – a place that’s far too touristy for most Viennese, but that you really should check out once! The most important crown treasure from the Middle Ages is on display there: the insignia and jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, including the Imperial Crown made of gold, pearls, and precious stones, as well as the Holy Lance. One of the world's largest emeralds is also shimmering there. But don't pocket anything! ;-)

The weather has become truly unpleasant here, so this gourmet workshop comes at just the right time: Together with Carmen Simini, who runs an organic farm with her sisters in the Italian region of Basilicata, you will cook your way into bella Italia. On the menu: traditional ravioli with pumpkin and cheese filling. You will also learn a lot about ancient grain varieties and how they are cultivated. At the end, you can of course taste the handmade pasta together with Austrian wine, and of course, you can take your own pasta creation home with you!

Roaming Pedals
For over a year, they were on their longest journey home of their lives – cycling from Cape Town back to Vienna. Now they are home and ready to share their many memories of elephants, sandstorms, and bizarre encounters. In their travel lecture today, Johanna and Tanja, alias Roaming Pedals, will be taking their audience on an adventure through the African bush, across the Arabian Peninsula, and to the mountain nomads of Iran. Exciting, bizarre, and entertaining, just like, well, a bike trip... and as far removed from a classic slide show as Cape Town is from Vienna!

Without further ado, he slips into the role of a fashion designer to search incognito for his perfect match and falls in love with Gültschöhrä of all people – without knowing which powerful fashion family she comes from. Dia de los Muertos
A nice idea: according to Mexican belief, on All Souls' Day, the “Dia de los Muertos,” the dead come to visit us from beyond and celebrate a joyful reunion with us living with music, dance, and good food. In Vienna, the Day of the Dead will be celebrated with great pomp today: Mexican artist Stephany Rodriguez Cabanas has designed a colourful altar for the dead for the Weltmuseum, the Ameyalli dance group will perform a dance of death in the columned hall, and everyone can join in the dancing at the Muerteada. Then it’s off to the after-show-party at the Mexican restaurant Comal!

Leyla McCalla
When she rebels against injustice, racism, or capitalism, it sounds beautiful: like Afrobeat, Ethiopian modes, Brazilian tropicalismo, and American folk and blues. It's no wonder that Leyla McCalla's music combines a wide variety of styles because she was born in New York, her parents are from Haiti, she grew up in Ghana, and today she lives in New Orleans. She combines these diverse styles and languages into touching and profound songs, accompanying herself on the cello, tenor banjo, and guitar. Today she will be presenting her new album “Sun without the Heat” live!

Cobbler, stick to your last! The Riegelnegg family has taken this cult phrase to heart, as they have been completely dedicated to shoes since 1896. However, the latter will soon be closing its doors and bidding farewell with a big sale: until 7 November, fashion queens can get an additional 30 percent off the outlet price and treat their feet to brands like Clarks, Josef Seibel, or Eco Ballerinas from Giesswein without feeling guilty about the price!

A distinguished visitor in town! Tom Boothe is an American filmmaker who is best known for his cooperative supermarket La Louve in Paris. He was also one of the inspirations for our local participatory supermarket, Mila. Today, he and other industry experts will be discussing topics such as democratic participation in the food system, social innovation through new forms of participation, and engagement rather than mere consumption. Afterwards, everyone will be invited to an open discussion. Fascinating, important, and inspiring!

Open Embassy Day
They are often quite luxurious and pretty tastefully furnished: Vienna's embassies. Until 5 December, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the 4th district and visit some of them. During the tours, you will learn a great deal about their roles and activities. Among others, the Albanian, French, Spanish and Cypriot embassies open their doors. Today it's Greece's turn: Its embassy is located in the Palais Vrints zu Falkenstein. The interior design of the building is considered to be one of the most magnificent and sophisticated examples of Viennese Baroque Historicism!

Massively Invisible
A bunker in Schönbornpark? Where could that be? This invisible structure is actually one of the best-preserved air-raid shelters from World War II. Used as a museum storage facility since the 1970s, it has served as a space for theatre and performances since 2024. With its project “massively invisible”, the Museum of Ethnology aims to make the building visible through ongoing visual and acoustic interventions in front of and around the bunker. The goal is to make the historical context and its disappearance comprehensible. It's open regularly in November – like today!

Right in the heart of the first district, the stationery label has created a space that combines a shop, café, and studio. Plus, there's also enough space for workshops and readings, and at the café they serve delicacies from Paremi paired with tea from Mariage Frères!

Rizumi
Charming, new, and conveniently just around the corner from CitySpotterGirl: At Rizumi, the young restaurateurs focus on ramen and sushi, with just a few appetisers and bowls on top. The menu isn't big, but well thought-out. And with 2 floors, the place has two distinct atmospheres: Upstairs is a bright space with a view of the kitchen, where broths simmer gently and gyoza sizzle in the pan. Downstairs it's almost elegant – subdued lighting, quiet conversations, the soft clinking of chopsticks. Extra nice: You can hang little notes with wishes on one of the walls – like a wishing tree :-)
